I know you were replying to somebody else, but I saw Badu and Al perform the album last night and it was fukking fire… The first ā€œsingleā€ is just a bonus track at the end of the album. By far the weakest track on there. Concert was dope. No phones allowed. Crazy set design. Live band with them. Badu is a beast. They killed it live. She even had an MPC and was making beats on stage live and drumming crazy
That's so dope man, I can't wait for this album.... Can you tell me what's the general sound of the album? In my mind I'm imagining some psychedelic slow soulful shyt

Yeah bro have you seen a Meowolf exhibit? If not you should Google it. It sounds like that looked. Basically how you described. Super colorful and funky. Definitely soulful but also thumpier than I thought. First couple songs were spacey and trippy. The middle gets more funky and upbeat. The end maybe gets a little more reflective? The last song had some spoken word stuff and was called Black Box. Some of the dope songs were called Witch Doctor, Valentine, I Just Play a Part, Broom, Breezy, and Apostle.

It comes out Friday

I think most of the overpraise comes from old heads who don't really listen to new releases anymore, so there's a desperation for these joints to be better than they are. They never moved on from the artists they listened to in their youth. These the type of mfs who can't even fukk with Griselda and Marci because the drums ain't hard enough :heh:

At this point, it's better to think of these Legend Has It releases as lil victory laps for legacy artists. A way of showing appreciation for their past work. The albums are like vessels for them legends to get a lil bit of spotlight. The music just ain't good enough on its own. None of these shyts are going to be remembered in the future.
This is definitely a big factor. There's a lot of posters on here that were from SOHH and never really fund new musical taste, and a lot of them (no oiffense to some of ya'll) are the ones asking for folks to Pass the Mustard when 99% of the world has moved on to having a Spotify or Apple Music account and just streaming everything.

It really surprised me how many people on here just now heard about Roc Marci because they clicked on his thread here because they say Preemo produced it. Like, how can anyone even slightly tapped in not have heard of Roc Marci between 2010 and 2025?
:dahell:

Most of us here are old heads and uncs, but there are levels to the old head and unc game. There are for real some people that never listened to any new hip-hip after the 200's. fukk, even Havoc is one of them. Havoc and ALC had a livestream last year, and ALC was talking about modern era classics (he was implying the last 10-15 years) and Al named DS2, TPAB, Pinata, etc, and he asked Havoc what his favorite new era classic album is, and Havoc said Get Rich or Die Trying :dead::flabbynsick: Al was like "I meant like last 10 years" and Hav couldn't really name anything. He looked dumbfounded. It just seemed like Hav stopped listening to new shyt after the 2000's.

I can't believe a white jew has more soul than the entire hip hop game right now
SC2 gnna be complete trash I'm calling it now. The last dope album he did was with a genuinely talented jazz band

Now that I think about it, that entire band was white
What's even funnier is... The dude that made the best track on Raes new shyt album is scram Jones.. Another white boy

I gotta be honest, I don't like this implication, and frankly this does a disservice at Al too, because it puts unnecessary friction on him. People are rightfully gonna start taking shots at him to defend what feels like an attack on the culture. Hiphop is black expression and black art at its core, and it always will be. White people are guests in the house. One of the reasons Al has the widespread respect that he does is because he believes that he's a guest in this art form and shows reverence and gratitude for that.

It just rubs me the wrong way whenever an argument is framed as "white people are doing black music better than black people." It really does feel kind of racist, and I feel like there are better ways to critique the game and make the kinds of points you're making.

The thing that strikes me about the Rae and Ghost albums is how aimless they are, creatively. They're just collections of songs, some of which are years old (SC2). The production largely feels like mid-to-late 00s stuff. Remember that 50 Cent diss Sheek dropped in 04 or 05, Maybe If I Sing? That shyt randomly came to mind while listening to SC2 last night because it's like the perfect example of the type of beats on here. Not "bad" but just there. Some white guy has multiple beats on the album, and when I looked him up he owns a studio that Ghost recorded in. Kinda tells you what you need to know.

I will give Mass Appeal props for Ghost getting an actual promo run. He's done all the rap shows you'd expect him to.
