I know you're a level-headed dude so indulge me a little further -

Give me an example of a genuine Mary Sue in pop-culture. People say Rey from the new Star Wars joints. Is that fair? Are there others or is there more of a fear of Mary Sue's than actual Mary Sue's in existence?

Like how nikkas believe only Black comedians are made to wear dresses but pretty much every male comedic actor since the days of Shakespeare plays have cross-dressed :patricelol:

So I honestly believe Rey from SW is a Mary Sue. I'm a very sensitive about how that term gets thrown around. I still think she learned and mastered her powers way to quickly and it was just very little struggle there. If I had to identify a Mary Sue, that would be it. Katniss from the Hunger Games is the complete opposite of a Mary Sue. Her struggle is the story. She is not likable, and it takes the supporting cast and her relationships with them to make the audience start to come to her side. Same with Ripley from Aliens. When she's introduced, she's stand-offish and comes across as judgmental and prudish, but then over the course of the film (and series) you start to see who she really is and appreciate her strengths because of her struggle. No one likes a character that just instantly is powerful and has no struggle or learning arc.

Yup I’d agree with all that. Although I will say last Jedi did give Rey some struggles and showed the issues she has as a person and as a Jedi.

Mary Sue is whatever. They just made Rey a trash character with a trash storyline.

She downloaded her training from Kylo:deadmanny:

Based on a quick google, apparently Dorothy, lily potter, katniss, and damn near every Disney princess. Oh and Bella Swan. They’re perfect in every way and every man wants them and every woman respects them.

Rey could be but I definitely see chinks in her armor
Dorothy? :pachaha:
Having your house fall on a witch after a tornado and your dog pull the curtain on to expose the white man's :duck: is a Mary Sue?

It’s more so for the book version of Dorothy cause I got it from a literature site. And I haven’t even started reading the wizard of oz yet so I can’t speak on it.

But the idea of a Mary Sue is a character who is perfect in damn near every way. Everyone loves her or him and they can do no wrong. So maybe that’s what she’s like in the book

I watch all this shyt but I don't engage in the "culture" of it so; what exactly is a Mary Sue? I've heard it/seen it before but I ignore it.

Based on context to me it just sounds like a woman who swoops in, is overpowered or disproportionately skilled and saves the day? Correct?

If so, is there a name for when the countless male characters do it? Or is it one of those... "neckbeard" things?

Basically, if Black Panther was the Captain Marvel in this situation, would people be mad at it and call him something or would it just be fine?
Yes because they have THOR!!!!! The fact that they've had to nerf all of the strong heroes is just ridiculous.

Brie preemptively called out white men being the critics of her movie so I guess she's invited to the cookout.:mjlol:
