You can find a place to live in the DC metro area on a $174k salary. You don't need to live on Capitol Hill.
Gotta think about security brah...a senator can't live in a normal 1 bedroom in some random complex.
Gotta be in a place with a doorman or a safe upscale neighborhood. Preferably near other politicians and top government workers.
174k is more than what most people make, its not enough for someone trying to mantain 2 homes. This where the problem really lies, the non-millionaire Rep with a wife staying in the home state is trying to do things that cannot be done on his salary. But they knew all this going in and many of them are just using Congress as a stepping stone to other high paying jobs in the private sector anyway so it shouldn't be much of an issue.
174k is about 120k after taxes, so it's 10k a month
In order for dude to maintain himself in DC (and he's a politician so he's not going to be living like a bum), it's going to be $3500 - $4,000 minimum. Could be higher as he would probably want to live in Dupont Circle, Georgetown and Downtown DC. Then you have all the hidden costs...a big one being traveling back and forth. He can send back maybe five racks to his wife. But we don't know how big their house is, what that mortgage is like, how many kids he has, how much the private school costs and if he's helping out others in his family like his parents or whatever. We don't know what their standard of living was before he went into office so that could be a step back for them. So that $174,000 went from being a huge salary to middle class.
An easy fix would be him rooming with other politicians (but that's can't be easy to find and maybe other politicians like their privacy) or his wife needs to get a job back home or his wife and their family needs to move to DC while he's in office instead of maintaining two residences. IIRC, Warren Buffett's family moved to DC when his dad was in office so I don't see why his can't.
