174k is more than what most people make, its not enough for someone trying to mantain 2 homes. This where the problem really lies, the non-millionaire Rep with a wife staying in the home state is trying to do things that cannot be done on his salary. But they knew all this going in and many of them are just using Congress as a stepping stone to other high paying jobs in the private sector anyway so it shouldn't be much of an issue.

Clearly you don't. They're broke as fukk.

If they work for a a senator or representative they'd be better off bagging groceries for those paychecks.

I am admittedly less knowledgeable about politics than I'd hope to be, though I have a question.

Why is it the taxpayers responsibility to help a congressman maintain two separate properties? Why doesn't he move closer to his place of employment and rent or sell his property in Utah?

I think about your average American employee asking his employer for a raise because he cannot afford two homes. I would think that employee would be laughed out of the office.

I am honestly asking for a logical or reasonable answer, though there may be some factors I'm not aware of. Can someone please enlighten me?

I'm about to do it on 50k, these guys can go fukk themselves

Plus, don't they all get free healthcare for life?
Probably food per diem as well. Then the hookups for being a senator.

They're very focused on making things very good for them

You can't ask for people to live in two districts on 174K or ask people to run for office and still struggle.

Then be surprised when they're drawn to private money.

Now, who exactly is asking these people to live in two separate districts when their job is located in one?

Is there congressional business that can only be done in Utah?

It would seem more logical for him to have his primary residence closer to his place of employment rather than in Utah. If he were adamant about keeping the property in Utah, why should that be the taxpayers burden?

Is the official response to placate them so they don't steal money or take private money? If that's required to keep them from padding their own pockets, should they even be members of the Congress?

They're supposed to talk to their constituents and be connected to the place they live as they're supposed to represent the people in their districts.

In practice though they've been avoiding town hall forums, avoiding their constituents, and not working for the people who elect them.

fukk anybody in this thread that's even remotely co-signing this.

"Well...D.C. is expensive" ass hoes..

These are the same fukkers that are cutting social services, complaining about welfare, cutting jobless benefits, looking to impose lifetime limits on healthcare coverage, cutting fukking Meals on Wheels, etc, etc...

$175k is plenty to make it in DC. Plenty of D.C. residents who make significantly less are doing it.

This guy can kiss my ass, along with anyone else on this thread co-signing him.

Well, you cut all the fun out of that line of questioning :russ:

That's why I am indifferent to their financial woes. They don't even do a half decent job.

You can find a place to live in the DC metro area on a $174k salary. You don't need to live on Capitol Hill.

Gotta think about security brah...a senator can't live in a normal 1 bedroom in some random complex.

Gotta be in a place with a doorman or a safe upscale neighborhood. Preferably near other politicians and top government workers.

174k is about 120k after taxes, so it's 10k a month

In order for dude to maintain himself in DC (and he's a politician so he's not going to be living like a bum), it's going to be $3500 - $4,000 minimum. Could be higher as he would probably want to live in Dupont Circle, Georgetown and Downtown DC. Then you have all the hidden costs...a big one being traveling back and forth. He can send back maybe five racks to his wife. But we don't know how big their house is, what that mortgage is like, how many kids he has, how much the private school costs and if he's helping out others in his family like his parents or whatever. We don't know what their standard of living was before he went into office so that could be a step back for them. So that $174,000 went from being a huge salary to middle class.

An easy fix would be him rooming with other politicians (but that's can't be easy to find and maybe other politicians like their privacy) or his wife needs to get a job back home or his wife and their family needs to move to DC while he's in office instead of maintaining two residences. IIRC, Warren Buffett's family moved to DC when his dad was in office so I don't see why his can't.
