Chargers may return to San Diego...as a soccer team
Landon Donovan, U.S. Soccer’s all-time goal leader, has joined an ownership group attempting to bring MLS to San Diego.
After the San Diego Chargers announced that they are moving to Los Angeles (to play in a soccer stadium), there’s room for a soccer club where the NFL once played.
FS Investors, the group Donovan is backing, wants to tear down Qualcomm Stadium and build a 30,000-seat stadium for a new soccer team.
The group is letting fans vote for the team’s name, which is a dangerous game to play online. Anyone with a Facebook account can vote once a day in what the team calls a March Madness-inspired bracket. The bottom ten choices are eliminated each round.
As of earning Saturday morning, generic San Diego Football Club is leading the polls with 399 votes. Two spots down is Footy McFooty Face. Other options include San Diego Classy, San Diego Taco Trucks, San Diego Burgundy and San Diego Burritos.
NFL fans are familiar with the options San Diego Bolts and San Diego Chargers, neither of which rank high in the voting (right now). Once the word gets out (oops) about this online voting, the results may start leaning away from traditional soccer names like SDFC.
It’s up to sports fans to decide if the Chargers will return to San Diego. You can vote for your favorite name (cough, Chargers, cough) here.
