After he opened the rear door, he was at point blank range. Victims were naked and unprepared for the ambush. If the shooter shot each one in the head for the first two shots, then the victims would be easy to hit for the following shots since they wouldn't be moving.
It says nine shots total, but it doesn't say one got five and the other got four. If he or she had a semi-automatic pistol, there's a possibility that ten or more shots were taken, but only nine hit.
