Why didn't she just leave?
If this mutha f*cka craziest enough to blast her head off, he may have been craziest enough to do it if she threatened to leave him

Why do people like this even get married?
She could have gotten married young and immature following footsteps of parents and society could have even been because of children?

Now why didn't he take it upon himself to just leave? After he apparently knew his wife wasn't about that life he did follow them there? Why is the onus all on the woman?

Why didn't he think about his kids and handle things like a mature rational adult

I'll give you one reason marriage is modern day slavery.
This is how you treat a slave they are your "PROPERTY" they have no rights to leave you "OWN" them they don't make independent decisions this isn't an act of passion it's an act of ownership. ( there where white and black slaves by the way )
There are no guarantees in life nothing most adults realize this. You get married with the best of intentions but marriage does not give you the keys nor license to take ones life! That's not what they sign up for.
