I am not even going to look it up, but the drill era probably wasn't even worse than the 1920s, 30s, 70s, 80s and 90s.
Over 20 US cities broke their all time murder rate during the drill era. Certain cities: Philadelphia, Memphis, & Baltimore just off the top of my head broke their all time murder rate in the last decade, records previously set in the crack era
I’ve never felt unsafe walking around in Chicago.
Memphis on the other hand.
Memphis was fine for me. Finding out I was in a "bad" spot during the years I spent there travelling for work was kinda funny (Hickory Hill)
Most of my Chicago time was near O'Hare by my old job spot, so ehhh to that area which is mostly cac. Midway area was aite, nothing crazy.

Chicago has had the most Overall murders for 13 yrs straight which is still crazy regardless if doesn’t have the highest murder rate.
Back when NY and LA was averaging 2k & 1k murders a year, they didn’t have the highest murder rate either, but it still drew the most attention, kinda like what Chicago is dealing with today.
