Yes and no.

It's just bad business moves and bad business management. Them Chinese folk are too cheap and untrusting to hire outside people to do their job so they don't have to work 12 hours a day 7 days a week.

Plus with the money they make and so-called save why don't they open up more restaurant chains and/or invest? Betting on your kid to become a doctor, engineer and successful to take care of the family is unfair and not fullproof. Their kids could be like nah fukk it. "I've worked my ass off my whole life for this family, I'm gonna do what I want now. I don't wanna be a doctor, lawyer or engineer".

And how can they come from severe circumstances to owning a restaurant chain? It's possible but I doubt all them Chinese chain owners saved pennies and pennies to build that business.

The people working 12 hours and 7 days a week have no other skills. That cheapness allows them to save money in labour costs and high attrition.

Unfair is a western gripe. They don't care about fairness. They care about the family and sacrifice not personal individualism/gratification.

Read some Confucius and it will all become clear to you.

As for how they do it, if you work from 1968 to 1990 with no vacations and cheap out on everything. You can raise 500-1million and buy the building/restaurant.

Oh yeah. Those kids are chillin in the cut through college and working at the front counter of the restaurant when their not in class. You go in when it’s slow and they’ll have their text book open until someone comes in to be seated.
The spot I went to most of my life, we all know each other on a first name basis. The grandma, mother, daughters, and cousins work in the spot. Late in the day, they in there doing homework between bussing tables. In spite of the other shyt we can talk about, thats work ethic.

The H
It ain't all rosy
A lot of them fail just like everyone else
I have seen an African lady, Chinese guy and a Pakistani forced out of business due to non-payment
Business wasn't making any profit and they locked them out

I feel like the article is about my life haha. Family had a restaurant, whole family had to work in it, made almost no money , hard work,14 hour days, 7 days a week, and I remember crying cuz I had to do restaurant work instead of hanging out with my friends, shyt sucked, but now the entire family have successful careers.

By the time I graduate college I already had 10 years of restaurant experience. I know a lot of people dislike chinese restaurants in the hood but most of our customers actually liked us and saw that we were just getting by like everyone else.

I worked w immigrants making 8 dollars an hour, who thought they were winning because they had consistent electricity and running water.it's a psychological boost and the kids can feel that energy imo, vs people who live that same situation and view it as an L because their only frame of reference is america.

edit: let's not forget that the immigration process self selects for hardy, ambitious, determined people. it's not a representative sample.

Great post.

The most determined people are the one's that make it plus they usually have a little luck on their side. It's like taking the top 10% of black people and comparing them to the other 90%. Not really apples and oranges.

Plus outsiders will have a different perspective and can see opportunities that natives don't....fresh eyes.

Same way an American would find loopholes in a foreign country that we would miss here.

I think cultural differences get undermined in these discussions
People always talk about black parents kicking kids out ignoring the fact black american youth are way more independent and don't prioritize their parents opinion as much as Asian or Africans. Asians be 30 yrs old stressing over what their parents want. If a black parent doesn't like their daughter boyfriend the daughter is moving out and living with the bf :yeshrug:
Black kids could live at home too if they were willing to be treated like shyt while giving up their whole paycheck like these 1st Gen kids. It's just a different mindset.
I agree with this, see a lot of Asians on twitter complain about not having freedom from their parents

Would you eat at a black owned Chinese restaurant?

And do you hire any black people in your “hood” ?
