That's the case most of the time but unfortunately women never receive flak for it.

Ray Rice was being attacked and defended himself and was shamed for it even though he was the victim in the situation.

it's honestly kind of messed up women of color especially black women when abused get less attention outside of celebrities nobody is giving two fukks when a sister get rocked across the street, I think that's why some of our women are more aggressive because they know society doesn't really put pressure on those who abuse them physically,mentally hell you have to fight back or become a victim. it's gotten to the point where even other groups of men think it's okay to put they hands on sisters and you'll have dudes sitting in the comments like "that's what that bytch get for shopping there:yeshrug:" if people on the outside see there is no repercussions on the inside they'll try it too
