You know
It's weird. CB had number 1 hits in the mid 2000s, but it always felt like he was on the edge of being mainstream. He was still more in the R&B space a bit.

And he went a long time without having a top 5 hit until No Guidance and Go Crazy came out. He's had a good number of top 10-15 hits though.

It's weird to quantify. He has his stans, but his real mainstream appeal is shot.
Chris brown was the record labels response to Usher. Anytime an act becomes “huge” a copy cat is pushed. It happened with the Jackson 5 and new edition. Even Ciara benefited from the success of confessions. Rihanna was a response to Beyoncé. “Run It” came out a year after “Yeah”

To be fair, that is true when you look at it that way.

It still shows how much he fukked up the bag though.

You see how big The Weeknd is? Headlining Super Bowls? Earning $50 million in 2015 - the year of his first breakout hit?

Chris Brown would have been even bigger than that, because the dude can actually dance really well, has better stage presence, and has more sex appeal than The Weeknd (:dame: it's true tho). And he still has a distinct voice, and genre versatility that would have given him features with chicks like Ariana grande and Doja Cat, like the Weeknd.

He REALLY fukked up the bag.

If you're comparing Chris Brown to The Weeknd or Drake, than yes CB's career has ended up being a disappoinment despite still being commercially successful.

:snoop: But this nikka @Dynamite James is really in here trying to compare CB to Mario.

Dude has been strictly urban since the Rihanna incident.

He doesn't get the placements that bruno & the weeknd get.
Bruno and Weeknd are POP artists right now. Bruno is DOPE, but he drops once every 4-5yrs,while Chris brown has put out literally 100 songs in that time frame.

Chris Brown is in the category of R. Kelly and Trey Songz. There's a sect of white ppl who live them, but it's mostly urban fans

I thought Justin Timberlake was the response to Usher.

That's why he fukked up the bag.

I think CB is bigger than he would've been otherwise.

He was being molded aa a goody 2 shoes safe next coming of MJ. He would've tried to be hard with age, but the label would've pushed him softer and fans would've saw his image as corny. He wouldn't have nearly the amount of features and releases he's had now.

That Rihanna thing ruined him initially, but his comeback made him have to basically be independent for himself.

CB has always been bigger than Trey Songz though & CB seems to have more diverse fanbase than R. Kelly does/did.

Chris trajectory was supposed to be the next big pop star after usher.

Chris killed his crossover appeal the day the rihanna incident happened.

He doesn't get the endorsement deals that he used & doesn't get the promo like he used to.

His albums were selling more before the incident as well.

He was one of them. There are always more than one. JT was a response to the 8701 era. CB was confessions era

Do you count Jason Derulo as also a response to Usher?

CB must have a terrible terrible contract because his album Heartbreak on a full moon went platinum in three weeks and he had a 36 city tour that year.

:scust: Terrible

That's the album that had like 40 something songs on it right?

Yep. He. Comes from the “usher” class. B2K and Omarion, Ne/yo( who I think is one of the greatest song writers). Craig David. Chris was obviously the only one close to “surpassing” Usher but it never happened . :yeshrug:

I actually think what killed CB's mainstream appeal for good was CB acting a fool & constant controversies after the F.A.M.E. album era. Because if you go look back at all the promo he did during the F.A.M.E. album era it looks like he was welcomed back into the mainstream. But by the next album, "Fortune", CB wasn't getting the same type of promotion anymore.
