Plus, for every year she doesn't work, she doesn't have taxable income, which means she doesn't put money towards social security for later in life after you decide to ditch her.

You say this as if it's a good thing. I still think marriage is a better way to raising a family than the alternative...living the single life and trying to run a broken home.

Marriage isn't for everyone. People in general are not committed to anything but themselves and their options. NO wonder marriages struggle. But if folk think the alternative is to live the single life and have seeds out of wedlock then so be it. I'd say, if you ant kids...get married. If you don't...stay single. However, I see nothing wrong with wanting to be committed to someone in the eyes of the law and society.

I don't understand why poor nikkaz cry about this stuff as if it will affect them. We hear about these stories because it affects wealthy men with wives that they decided to support. Allow me to give a normal marriage scenario:

You aren't rich and famous. You fall in love with a woman who clearly doesn't love you for your money, but something more. She works at a office as an administrator making 30k-40k and is in her mind to late 20's. You are a intro IT guy making 45k-55k in your late 20's.

You get married and decide to have a family. One of the FIRST discussions you will have is about child care. Will she go right back to work or stay home? A new born baby full time in day care costs between $250-$300 a week. If she is making 35k, she might only clear $450-$500 a week. So do you need her working full time to clear $150 a week while a stranger raises your kid or does she stay home and you add a cert and get a salary bump?

You decide to have her stay home and you have another kid a few years later: now two kids need daycare or after school care if she goes back to work. Meanwhile, she's been out of her career path for 3 years now and would be lucky to walk back into her same job and salary while you have added needed experience to yours and increased your earning power.

Fast forward, marriage hits the rocks, 2 kids and 10 years later and you want out.

Your now a 100k a year pen tester and she's still a office administrator, except she now hasn't worked for ten years.

You've relied on her to double your earning power where she has most likely lowered hers.
