Good discussion in this thread

:blessed:

Just to reiterate, you don't have to use the OP classic definition go by your personal feelings BUT try and reach a balance of what you perceive personally as well as what is consensus for the obvious ones.

I don't like Criminal Minded but I know it's a classic the same way 2+2=4

There's def an argument to be made that Outkast have three classics (Southernplayalistic, Aquemini, & ATLiens) but Stankonia and Speakerboxx/TheLoveBelow were a decline for them - both projects lacked cohesion and even sonically weren't as good.

Funny that by the most common definition of a classic album southernplaya is kast's most obvious classic and yet fukkery has it chilling in borderline territory

yeah I feel ya but also when you factor in the quality too, ATLiens and Aquemini are better albums, so that 'classic' label immediately sticks out more, independent of impact/influence and what have you

:mjlol::pachaha:

When cadillac music dropped, was Player's Ball gettin radio spins in your city? That shyt was everywhere out in the Bay. Cats ate that cool, southern pimp shyt up.

The radio didn't really pick up on Outkast until the 2nd album out here. I'm from Kansas City, Missouri.

They had the streets and youth on lock though from day 1. I was a senior in high school when "Player's Ball" dropped and a gang of kids started wearing ATL jerseys.

I wasn't feeling that shyt so I started wearing Royals jerseys. "Outkast is dope but don't forget where the fukk you're from". :martin:

I don't even like baseball.:mjlol:

Girls wasn't really into Outkast out here so me and another dude would memorize shyt off their first album and pass it off as our own raps. :lolbron:

Had them girls like :ahh:

Building off this important post, what I'm gonna say will ruffle some feathers: Outkast in general don't make hip hop.

I need you to quantify this statement by saying when this happened. At what point in their career I mean. Depending on that I may or may not agree with you.

It's not an instant change. It happened gradually with every album.

The noticeable change? Aquemini. They just kept expanding on their ideas and genre selections. Their first two albums are definitely far more hip hop than anything else. Aquemini to me is when the larger shift starts happening. But they were playing with other genres on Atliens too.

I don't think aquemini is necessarily better than southernplaya
