All of their underground/Prophet Posse stuff is slept on too hard

You could have definitely included Prophet Posse Body Parts in this discussion, OP.

Can someone make the argument for Mystic Styles? At what point did this become an album that the core community held up as a classic? Since nobody knew about it in 95.

Over time, it has been referred to by many as a point of influence and reference for many producers and artists.

EVERYONE knew what Vanilla Ice's album was, but that didn't make it a classic.

There are albums that didn't get the love the deserved when they came out, but have come to be recognized as trailblazers or influential. I think that MS is one of those albums.

In my opinion, the bold is the only reason I won't fault anybody for not saying it's a classic.

Still, it's got the OG "Tear Da Club Up", the OG "Break Da Law", "Porno Movie" and "Live By Yo' Rep" on it.
Those are cuts that would go on a Three 6 Mafia 101 compilation, should such exist. Those are Tier one Three 6 cuts.
While the album was a slow burn, it was definitely influential to future generations - like some might say of Illmatic.

Mystic Styles only sold a slightly less amount of copies than Illmatic in 1st year sales...and unlike Mystic Styles, Illmatic was released on a major and had radio/video play :sas2:

But according to the coli... Illmatic is some universal classic...even though the album couldn't compete commercially in it's own era, even with a heavy commericial push and being heavily gassed by the hip-hop media. :sas1:

Mystic Stylez was groundbreaking (over time) and highly influential, especially for an indy album

The End had some genius production, many incredible songs

World Domination is 3-6 at their peak, some of their most popular songs (TDCU 97, Hit A MF, Late Nite Tip) included

When The Smoke Clears was their big breakthrough platinum album, again with classic beats (Where Da Cheese At, Tongue Ring, Just Like Us, MEMPHIS) and songs (Who Run It, Sippin')

All 4 are hip hop classics, no doubt in my mind. Also all 4 albums' replay value and longetivity are top notch

"Force a Southern album as classic" insecure edition.

No classic albums. Not even close.

3 6 Mafia are pioneers of a certain sound/bounce that lots of people (my favorite new school rapper included) borrowed. But others improved on the shyt and outdid them.

Hurts, I know. Feel free to deflect to talking about SirBiatch rather than the topic at hand :umad: (in advance)

By this logic, there are no old school classic albums.

how did you conclude that

If - as you say - rappers don't have classic albums because people borrowed what they did and did it better,
then there can't be any classic albums...because there are plenty of Golden Age rappers that would get washed
by new school rappers, but said new school rappers would readily admit they borrowed from the Golden Age ones.
