Thought I told you numerous times my community worship and needs the democratic party.. I cast my vote in their favor.. While you're trying to educate me on the word nuance, seems like you really need to work on reading comprehension skills..
Ahh so you are such an uncritical thinker that you will vote for what you consider as the same white supremacy as Reagan because other black people told you to? Its pretty obvious you aren't that bright when you do the "I know what nuance means but I won't tell you" thing and proving you dont know what it means with your beliefs.

Collin didn't watch that Fresh Prince fraternity episode with OG Bobby Johnson?

Kap was raised with white people. There's some shyt you can't fake...no matter how big your fro is.

You see it.

And I don't mean no disrespect to the brotha. I don't think he has bad intentions.

But I do believe that he's fallen into the trap that so many folks fell into, which is he's trying to monetize our struggle.

And then to make it worse, he's monetizing a struggle that he didn't really spend his life being a part of.

Kap said "characters assimilate or conform". How in God's green Earth did Urkel conform or assimilate? Because he was intelligent, nerdy, corny at times, that made him assimilate or conform? Steve's whole family (Winslows), life, women he liked, best friends, bringing Johnny Gill, New Edition, Freddie Jackson to sing (white folks don't know about Johnny Gill or Freddie Jackson like that), that's all black. I NEVER saw Urkel as a white based character. He was culturally black all day. Urkel even had Laura's back when the white kids sprayed ****** on Laura's locker. Kap is reaching.

Now Carlton... he was questionable in the beginning but as seasons went on, he became less of a Bryant Gumbel joke character and more of a Black Republican type of dude, who again had a Black family, pledged a Black frat, was into Black women, went on Soul Train, etc. Storyline wise, I like to think him going to jail over driving too slow changed him. But nothing was really c00ning about Carlton (especially after the 1st season), even if you thought he conformed or assimilated. He was just corny and a nerd.

And I never knew white America "made" Carlton or Urkel. Those characters are beloved in the black community as well as everywhere else. Now JJ, that's a different subject.
I don’t even like Family Matters like I used to but I 100% agree! That show was black as hell lol. The white dude they tried to sneak into the cast even got the :camby: eventually. Shanice was on the show. Sanaa Lathan, so many classic black actors/actresses were on there. That was a big reach. Carlton was super stuffy and republican but he was aware of his blackness especially with the help of his family. Man Kap cool but doing this with these old ass characters is hilarious to me. This seems like taking points from 10 years ago or better.

You can tell Kap hasn't made it to all the way where he needs to be because he's telling on himself in his statements. As black people, we only care what white people think if you are a threat. If you are not, then it is unimportant, and that is the real freedom, to be unapologetically black by being yourself, whether a nerd, family man, thug, money getter, etc, and giving 0 fukks how anyone else feels. Because regardless if you are "acceptable" or not, one day we all will get that wake up call that tells us that white supremacy will never love us, so why worry how others feel about us? If you are an ally or love us, cool. If not, as long as you are not a threat, we don't care. Let those mental chains go. Never view who you are through someone else's lens, as THAT is the real power they have over you.

He basically saying Carlton and urkel are more palatable to white people bc they don’t look like thugs or dangerous. He isn’t saying there is anything wrong with either character but how white people THINK they should be an example of the ideal negro

Eh, in all fairness to Colin I'd like to see the episode in its entirety. However, the fetishization of Black being is predicated on multiple understandings of acceptance and performativity--some more dominant than others.

In other words, when considering the various characters that have been listed as examples, we're arguably doing them a disservice by simply writing them off as "safe" for White consumption. While revolutionary may be a rather strong term to use, Urkle and Carlton also represented other understandings of Black masculine being that shouldn't be readily written off because White people purportedly think they're safe.
