It comes down to position, period. The QB position in today's NFL is far and away the most important position, and it's not debatable. It is that simple. Nothing more, nothing less.

The point is that they and VERY KTHER POSITION have bad contracts. But people only single out running backs for this.

I think a clear and convincing argument can be made T is the second most valuable position. I value OL play extremely highly. I don’t think a team can have consistent success without one

I was thrilled when the Bears took Darnell Wright with our top pick in this draft. We made some splashier free agent signings but my favorite one was picking up a solid RG in Nate Davis. I love OL play. There is a reason those guys are banking huge deals now

To your point though -- a RB is *usually* only as good as his OL; Guard and Center in particular. If your Center is basura/not very cerebral your OL/running game/QB is going to struggle, massively.

because you cant find high end replaceable talent for those positions easily at the end of the draft or cheap pick ups in free agency. there are undrafted running backs being effective in this league

Every position is expendable to a certain degree and even if it isn’t teams to prevent them from getting paid by using the franchise tag.

In retrospect Zeke was smart to hold out two years early.


To me the best running back is Chubb. And he should be the standard. At least 5.0 ypc. Every year since he’s been in the league. Aaron Jones was a 5th round pick from UTEP and he averaged 5.1 last year. Taylor was doing the same thing but got hurt in year 3.

Backs in this era realistically shouldn’t be carrying the ball more than 300 times in a season anymore.

Austin Eckler should really be the blame for all of this because he’s the template teams are going to use. He wasn’t drafted at all, and puts up respectable numbers to compliment their offense. Even the chiefs.


At the end of the day, teams aren’t going to pay big bucks to a running back if they don’t have a franchise quarterback. And if they had a franchise quarterback back, the offense would be flexible enough to where they wouldn’t need a franchise running back.

you can get good production off the scrap heap for RBs

you still have to pay money to get a guy at a Dalton, Daniel Jones level

This can be done with a ton of other positions too. How did Derek Carr and Jimmy G contracts work out? How is Kyler's contract working out? How about Amari Cooper? Dez Bryant? Michael Thomas? Ain't nobody in a huff that Brandin Cooks has made over $100m in his career as a short one dimensional WR. Christian Kirk just signed for 4/72, but we're gonna pretend like giving that to a RB is a problem as a second contract? Keenan Allen has been off the field more than on it and he's getting $20 per year.

Y'all will argue RBs down to the bone, but will skip over the context that every other position has bad second contracts too. There's good versions too. Henry got his money and still going. McCaffrey too. Nick Chubb is outperforming the fukk outta his contract. Before that it was Adrian Peterson. Frank Gore. Marshawn. Steven Jackson. Edge. LT.

Because for the 1000th time positions are not created equal in terms of value.
