If I hated something as much as he does I would just ignore it and rarely give it any attention. Its clear he is in love. Getting back to the OP's question. Go to your local mosque, bro and get an imaam to educate you on the religion better. Take everything he says into consideration and don't rush your decision. This is actually a funny post considering my friend who is Jamaican was asking me about Islam in class yesterday and she told me how she was actually thinking about converting for a long time. What happened around the world when islam came as far as cultural development is islam. Many of these places, especially Europe had a problem with hygiene and literacy and Islam requires those who submit to help civilize others.

2. Read multiple translations of the Quran, some of them vary
3. Do the best you can
You don't have to "try" to be a muslim. Just live your life in a righteous way. You already know what that means. Love and believe in Allah and his power. Be a man who provides, protects, and leads your family. Contribute to society. Give to charity. Help those in need etc. I know many people who live their lives as muslims and don't know it.

Edit: Don't feel like you have to rush into anything like changing your name, getting married, praying 5 times a day, making hajj, growing a beard, eating only halal prepared food (except for pork, cut that mess out). Take things slowly. Read about them and make sure that it makes sense to you. Don't do things just because someone told you to do them. Allah knows your heart.
