We got a new executive producer but nothing has fundamentally changed. :francis:

I know I'm absolutely blowing this thread up today, but I just wanted to ask everyone a question based on this post I'm quoting.

Does anyone here think the long term repercussions of Covid (I'm talking 5-10+ years down the line) could involve more people moving away from religion? If we go back and realize a lot of deaths were among the religious population, or if a lot of children lost at least one parent that was religious, etc?

I just can't help but think about what all the children right now might think when they get older if they lose parents that chose to not get vaccinated, or what if children that get long-term Covid complications might think about their religious parents preventing them from getting vaccinated, and possibly harboring resentment?

Just some thoughts.

You will absolutely see it later on and you're seeing it now as well, not just with religion but with politics and within families in general. What I'm noticing more and more with a lot of these "if only we had of thought this through more!" stories is that a lot of these people simply didn't want to admit to initially being wrong, even though they ultimately realized they were at some point, and pride caused them to ride it out which end up costing them their life or someone they loved.

I think the Atlantic article within this tweet is especially incredible, and a worthwhile read for anyone: Americans Are Losing Sight of the Pandemic Endgame

"The more people get vaccinated, the less transmission occurs in the community, reducing everyone’s risk of infection."

This has been the endgame for every vaccine for every disease, let alone covid. Not prevention but reduction to the point of it being near zero.

"Vaccines are most effective at preventing infection with viruses that have a long incubation period, such as measles and smallpox; the immune system’s memory kicks in before the virus can fully establish itself in your body. But some invaders, such as influenza and the coronavirus, have a shorter incubation period, so vaccines are less likely to entirely block infection. In other words, the virus can still enter your nose and throat and start replicating."

This I was unaware of to that degree. Welp...

So school starts for my agency on Monday, yes all kids should be wearing masks all staff as well. I am giving it 3 weeks before one (or multiple) classes move to remote learning...

It's the endgame but a lot of people that don't want to get vaxxed say that it doesn't matter because people that are vaxxed can get sick anyways. I've seen people say this all the time. And apologies if we're saying the same thing and I just misunderstood, but I'm seeing a lot of shrugs at the vaccine, thinking it's pointless, because it doesn't entirely prevent infection.

That's all I meant by highlighting the article. That and the fact that since we've been slow to take the vaccine to begin with, that we shouldn't be surprised at more mutations and potentially reaching a point where there's a more vaccine resistant strain.

I do think the media and the government did a sub-par job explaining to people how vaccines work, and not to expect invisibility from Covid just because they got the shot. Anti-vaxxers are using the fact that breakthrough cases simply exist (no matter how low the percentage) as a reason why it's not even worth getting the shot.

I'm a black male deist, that in itself offers a lot of singularity and uniqueness. I hope I don't come off as crass with the following.

So, let me start here. The ascribing of medicine and medical successes to faith or some other esoteric rationale has always bothered me due to the fact prayers have always been offered up through history for illnesses but they were never getting 'answered' until the science showed up. Furthermore,
science is a continuous study, from multiple generations that dedicated their lives to a cause, being passed down and improved upon as history progresses.

So, when I see people say that they will cloak themselves in the armor of God or something along those lines, I always wonder if they really sit down and think about the gravity of these thoughts. Do they think it will come to fruition because they said it out loud and/or posted it on the internet.

Religion as a concept or a construct that probably has a net positive with a lot of people who are aware of the tenets of their respective religion. Unfortunate circumstances arise when we encounter those times that requires critical thinking. That's when things usually go left.

Tangent off but could you see some people move away? Sure but you will also have people inevitably double down because they will say that _______ didn't really believe in God or their faith wasn't strong enough and that because I believe, I'm going to be OK.
