You're right there were studio gangsters but a lot of hardcore rappers were out there. Rap had the gangsta/hardcore fad and drake did not fit that criteria because he was a middle class/upper class person before the fame. Simple as a,b,c nikka and no one was checking canadian rap in the 90s.

Drake wouldn't have made it, unless he claimed a RnB dude that can rap too. And even then, the RnB dropping at that time was actually good so he would have gotten clowned for being a lackluster singer....


Once the whole gangster rap era faded, and the bling era came in and rappers got exposed for not really being as hood as they let on drake had a lane open up, combine that with all the rappers trying to sing and singers trying to rap and drake just blew up at the right time and place.

It's so fukking simple...90's rap was in the hardcore period and some of the nikkas came from hardcore hoods. Drake is from a rich neighborhood (richmond hill) and he did not fit that image whether if he was real or fake. simple
