In terms of personality the other east harlem cat Bodega Bamz has more personality and he knows how to interact with the hypebeast/blipster crowd unlike East, but Bodega simply put is not that talented as an MC. East is not a hypebeast/blipster rapper (this was Bamz only lane) though I'm gonna disagree. Bodega Bamz never appealed to the streets you had to be on the internet to know about him.

On the macro level nobody making "NY rap" is breaking out for the same reason that nobody making "Bay Area rap" breaks out... the sounds are too localized and for the most part they're not soulful enough.

On the artist level, Desiigner got waaaaaay more soul just in that Timmy Turner hook than Dave East ever had in any of his songs. A lot of these 2010's New York rappers act like they're afraid of being themselves... they copy what nikkas were doing 10 years ago without realizing that the NY rappers that were successful 10 years ago did so by being themselves. Cam'ron was Cam'ron, 50 was 50 and Jay was Jay. Their lyrical content was bullshyt a lot of the time but their style was THEIR style. This new generation of NY rappers could use some artistic exploration... your music can be New York without paying homage to the "New York sound".
