I think this thread is even more pertinent in the wake of the Mike Brown and Eric Garner debacles.
A lot of black people are looking at this through a religious lens, waiting on God or Jesus to set things straight or punish the unjust on Judgment Day or whatever.
And if you honestly feel that way, I'm just going to go ahead and say you might as well be smoking crack. The high you get from anticipating divine intervention is not productive and it's not based in reality. You have to realize that there is no spirit being that's going to save you...YOU have to work to save yourself and those around you. There is no evidence for a creator. Your personal belief in God is a coping mechanism or a result of indoctrination or misguided logic or all of the above, but besides sustaining a misplaced confidence borne out of ignorance, it has no real world basis and cannot be relied upon to solve real world problems.
It makes sense that a large number of black people embrace belief in God, because the powerless and the weakened are the ones most likely to escape from reality. But it's time to move past that.
