Dude pretty much shut down the label, and is just a celebrity DJ now.

i think Dupri's main problem was the fact that SO SO DEF was basically a production company masqurading as an indy imprint, when in reality his daddy Michael Mauldin helped him land that distribution deal with Columbia Records, it was quite clear Dupri was biting off more than he could chew...

although he was adept at developing acts, and nutruing new talent i.e (xscape, da brat, kriss kross) , none of these acts could be seen as Marquee acts that could stand the test of time , unlike Bad Boy's own B.I.G and Cash Money's Lil Wayne.....

In order to be a succesful imprint (label) you have to be able to handle the administrative responsibilites that comes along with the burden of a multimillion dollar distribution deal.

One of which is to continue to build the equity of the label which is found in it's catalog.....SO SO DEF hasn't done that, because Dupri never had total autonomy over the catalog, ..he didn't exclusively OWN THE MASTERS of his acts.......jagged edge and bow wow he gave gave up to Columbia Records when they decided to NOT renew his distrubtion deal.

So when he moved from Columbia to Arista to Jive/Zomba to Def Jam , he kept losing equity in the form of artists and licensing rights.....but wasn't able to compesate for the loss i.e (going in debt).

Mainly because most of his deals are nothing more than production deals, due to his lack of leverage to obtain the Joint Venture deals as Diddy has been known for , or what Baby maintains with Universal.

Dupri has been basically subcontracting his talents to these major labels and not gaining any tangible value in return.

Rocko the artist realized that when Dupri "tried" to conduct business with him while at DEF JAM and Rocko realized Dupri doesn't have the "pull" that he misleads people into thinking he have ..and Rocko went out and decided to "do him"...securing his own deals and being his own boss:

because the idiot didn't recieve "EXECUTIVE PRODUCER" credits on none of those great selling albums....he did all that damn work...and didn't recieve the exec credits.

look at "Confessons" and the "Emancipation of Mimi" everybody (LA reid, usher, and even the a&rs such as Mark Sudak ate well off of this......don't get me wrong producers get good money off of placements..but if you wanna be TRULY WEALTHY .....exec. producer credits is where it's at:
