Research that shyt yourself. It's a known fact that Rick Rubin started Def Jam when he was at NYU. Russell was just a promoter at the time when someone introduced them at a club. Rick asked Russell if he could help get the word out about Def Jam, and the rest is history.
It was a mutual thing.. not Rick putting Russell on. Russ already had it crackin'. He managed one of the biggest acts at the time which was Kurtis Blow and his brother, DJ Run, was Kurtis Blow's dj. He brought in LL Cool J a fellow Hollis Queens native, made Krush Groove, etc.. Dude don't make it sound like Rubin(who is a rap pioneer btw) put Russ on:snoop:

News flash for you dummies, a white man created Def Jam (Rick Rubin). More Breaking News.....Def Jams first ever release was a track for a punk rock band named Hose. Lyor Cohen and Julie Greenwald, both "cacs", were two of the earliest execs there. If it weren't for these "culture vultures", you clowns wouldn't have heard of LL Cool J, Public Enemy, EPMD, Onyx, etc.
All true. And no one can say that the execs don't know their shyt.

Just the fact that a company built on black talent doesn't have us at EVERY level is disappointing. Whether blacks don't want these positions or are being kept down,
It still sucks.

It's been said that Jigs got that president position because he "informed" some higher ups about Dame, Suge, J Prince and Irv's meeting about the infamous black distribution plan. Don't know if I believe that, but it seems very possible. If true, Jigs is the worst kind of sellout.

I always heard it was Diddy who did that.

I'm not discrediting Russells accomplishments but had DJ Jazzy Jay not introduce the two of them, Russell would not have been a part of Def Jam. So in Rick being the creator, yes he put Russell onto Def Jam. And LL Cool J mailed his demo to tons of labels in NYC, Def Jam happened to scoop him up. Don't make it seem that Russell plucked James Todd Smith out of obscurity.

All I'm sayin' is that Russ was a big time dude even before meeting Rubin at NYU. And what would Def Jam be with just Rubin only, a novelty underground punk label? You making it sound like Russ was small potatoes out there struggling on the street until the Jew Gawd Rubin threw him a lifeline:what: Def Jam just happened to scoop LL up??:mjlol: everybody was rollin' with Rush breh... Run DMC, LL, Eric B & Rakim, DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, Public Enemy. LL had to f*ck with Def Jam just because of Russ, plus they're both from Queens. Go ahead and big up the whites but please don't undermine Russ

Are you retarded ? Did you not read the first 4 words of my previous post. All I'm saying is that Rick put Russell onto Def Jam. How you interpret that, is not my problem.

Just the fact that a company built on black talent doesn't have us at EVERY level is disappointing. Whether blacks don't want these positions or are being kept down,
It still sucks.

This is what really needs addressing.

What the people sitting at that table look like is irrelevant. If that's the issue, what are we doing to correct it? What are we doing to cultivate knowledgeable Black execs that will cultivate talent on every level? I mean we spend a lot of time pointing out what these artists and labels should be doing, but it's meaningless if:

1) Nobody's communicating a 5 point plan on how to get it done to someone who will actually put it into motion

2) It's just talking points just to have something to discuss

3) It's just posturing

It's easy to complain about it, but if no action is being taken, it will continue. Those people who sit at the table are still employees. If people aren't buying and listening to the products that they are in control of releasing to the masses, they wouldn't eat. The fact is that the crowd that these execs are targeting actually like the music that we view as garbage. Remember when we were their age, we were the crowd that execs were targeting. The music that we liked was detested by the group that wasn't being targeted. There are a lot of people who hate the music that came out in the 80's and the 90's.
