It's ignorant in the context of some European dikk journalist asking an american black athlete a question about fukking geography when the man is prolly thinking about getting to the season with his damn knees intact.

You think he would have asked a Spaniard, Englishman, Frenchman, Italian or German that question?

No he wouldn't have....because he knew what he was trying to prove. The response was justified because it was a dumb fukking question (and I gots my undergrad in Journalism) because I has nothing to do with the game about to be played. That would be like asking an NBA player "Hey man, do you know where the opposing team's coach is from?"

No one gives a shyt and he prolly doesn't either.

Don't forget. Most of these European countries are throwing fukking bananas on the field when black soccer players come to town.

2. it's common sense that a European team would know where other European teams are, so the question isn't as relevant.

3. he legitimized the American ignorance stereotype by the way he answered the question, instead of taking the air out the reporters question. he made it bulletin board material and also a headline.

an answer of

"No, but we respect every opponent we face and the skills they bring on the court"

would have easily diffused any "attempt" of "gotcha" journalism you believe the reporter was trying to have and it would not have been a headline.

It's basic PR, imo. YOu say no and move on or you give a better response.

primarily, he should know where his next opponent is from or he shouldn't be the one being interviewed IMO.

besides that, the comment about "do you know where Alabama is" is just a infantile response. Just say no. Alabama isn't playing, the U.S. is and I'm sure the reporter and Slovenia's know where the U.S. is.

Granted there is a difference between state and country the point still holds I think. Especially considering that everyone can easily pull up the tournament catalog and find out where each and every player is from (I assume).

But most of you have never been overseas, never represented anyone much less your country, and never worked in the PR field - so I expect these kind of responses.

It's like when you meet an uneducated person and they are so ignorant , that when you speak to them educationally they get mad and start getting an attitude with you and being antagonistic. In your head, you're like "these people are ignorant" and in their head they are like "he thinks he so smart, i'll show them".

2. You see what you just said there? "Common Sense" he didn't assume that this American would have the "common sense" to know where some country that isn't even as big as his home state its. It was a bait question from jump and that's irresponsible (and offensive) journalism. Rock group TOTO came out with that song "Africa" in the 80's...its just as fukking dumb as any journalist asking one of them "OH, have any of you ever even BEEN to Africa?"

3. Cousins took the bait somewhat, but he fired back. fukk that old canned response bull shyt this isn't the NY Times press, this isn't ESPN. As someone who's been in the field, when you ask someone a dumb question your credibility is shot and your chance for getting any type of meaningful information is gone. It was clear this reporter only wanted a edgy sound byte and that I can't respect.

1. so you speak multiple languages? because most of the interviews (non us) haven't been in English, I watch these games and they aren't usually in English. I don't want to debate this because the majority of the countries are European, so it wouldn't be as relevant.

2. fine could be a stupid question, who knows the reports intent. I'm not going to focus on that, the response needed to be better. The reporter is a nobody, he will go about his business with his name in the headlines now. You depower these type of people by not fueling the fire. That's the art of PR, but again most of you have no idea about this nor sports psychology as witness by the OU superstar in this thread. And it's fine, but you're trying to argue me down about it and have no idea.

3. And cousins fell victim to it. The question was imbecilic and it wasn't without some merit, he could have been playing the "David vs Goliath" angle - either way Cousins fell victim to an even larger stereotype "the ignorant American"

That's an assumption right there thats dangerous in its self. Because people didn't agree with you they are ignorant or have never left the country? That's silly. its not a terrible question to ask in general..since yugoslavia broke up not too long ago and some/most dont know about slovenia..but it was obviously baiting and stupid. why didnt they ask coach k that?

thats what they do in europe to many americans though. they assume most of us are stupid and/or should know a bunch of minute details and think they are intellectually superior because they 1) can speak english even if its not their primary language 2) know some basic geography 3) know some presidents 4) watch our TV programs/sports.
