unemployment was in the 3s before covid. trump would have been running on the economy and jobs, which is mostly what swing voters care about

conversely, without covid, biden would have been massively deprived of his number 1 campaign message, which was "ill handle it better than this fukkin idiot". and i dont even know what he would have ran on. being more empathetic than trump :mjlol:
Agreed. Biden needed record turnout to beat Trump and did it only by 47K in swing States. His main campaign was beating Covid and fixing the economy. If he doesn't have those what's he go to run on?

theres a high likelihood that the republicans take all 3 back in 2024

can you imagine the crying and bytching that would take place in here if there was no filibuster :mindblown:

and mitch COULD have got rid of it himself in 2017, but he didnt

Only bc 1) he knew there was strong likelihood of Dems returning to power and 2) they still got 95% of what they wanted without getting rid of it.

If GOP only had a one vote margin and filibuster was blocking most of their agenda he would've gone nuclear.

i'm mostly in camp #1, but have no beef with #2 and can see their perspective, but all that's moot right now because camp #3 can prevent even #2 from doing what's needed.

I'm still torn on all the filibuster removal talk and it has to do with the bolded. I never saw reluctance to it as a fear of what Republicans might do without it, but rather an important defense strategy against what we KNOW they're going to do. Now I might be giving Dem leadership too much credit on having that type of foresight but I personally don't trust relying on voters to the extent that you do.

If they fail to provide substantial assistance to their constituents by not doing all of those very things you suggested, who was responsible for putting them into office in the first place?
That goes back to my original point about how worrying so much about what the republicans are gonna do has ended up with the Dems shooting themselves in the foot repeatedly. They're literally negotiating against themselves right now and worrying about made-up rules. It's not that I trust voters to behave rationally (look at MAGA); it's that I think more than enough voters will show up to keep the Dems in power if they actually wield their power and implement popular policies that will help people.

I'm not sure what you're asking here. If the Dems don't follow through then a lot of voters are going to take it as another example of why voting doesn't matter, and they'll end up out of office in a few years anyway.

Sure but this doesn't support the argument that trump would have won in a landslide. I agree it would have been closer and trump had a good chance thanks to the electoral college, but I've seen nothing to suggest he was going to run away with it.

Camp #1 - Although it's fantasy talk because there will be corporate dems doing the GOP job of obstructing. You need to get go big this time and pass everything you can. Twist arms where you can. Dems need to be reminded that they were elected to get things done. Go big or go home.

Camp 2 would be my compromise.

Camp 3 is a no deal:camby:
