UPDATE, 9:15 p.m. April 10: Baton Rouge Police arrested a 22-year-old Florida man for his alleged role in a shootout at a party that left two Southern University students dead and wounded another man.
Ernest Bernard Felton, of 3865 Day Ave., Miami, Fla., was arrested by Baton Rouge Police Sunday evening and booked into Parish Prison on counts of attempted second-degree murder and illegal use of a weapon.
Felton, who was at a social function in the Cottages apartment complex off Ben Hur Drive near LSU’s campus, exchanged fire with a 24-year-old man who pulled up in a Chevrolet Cobalt around 2 a.m., said Sgt. Don Coppola Jr., a police spokesman.
Two female 19-year-old Southern University students, Annette January of Gary, Indiana, and Lashuntae Benton, of Lake Charles, were caught in the crossfire and killed, Coppola said. The 24-year-old man, who has not been identified by police, was wounded in the shooting and remains hospitalized, Coppola said.
Coppola said detectives believe a previous altercation between Felton and the 24-year-old wounded man led to the shootout.
Police are awaiting the results of ballistics tests to determine which of the shooters is responsible for killing January and Benton, Coppola said.
