Rakim imo has to be one of the biggest letdowns in hip hop...
I really feel he didnt live up to his full potential
He did live up to his full potential...He was a very limited lane rapper...What he did best was the star, moons, Egypt, number seven, I am a god rap...That is Rakim...

Dre wanted him to bring it back to Earth, and he couldn't, because that's not Rakim....He is the reason why 2Pac followed the KRS 1 and Ice Cube school of rapping...2Pac didn't want to be "super lyrical" or should use Coli terms and say "technical lyricist"...hahaha...2Pac wanted to directly speak to his audience, in terms that they could understand...

Dre wanted Rakim to do the same, be more like KRS 1, Ice Cube, 2Pac and Scarface...You can still "resurrect" people taking this approach, and you will be making Dre and Iovine boat loads of money in the process i.e. WIN WIN situation...

But Rakim does not have the skill set to walk down that lane...

Rakim's full potential is Canibus, and we know what happened to him...

hahaha...

I was going to say the same thing...We are still waiting for Detox...If Dre was a clone of himself, he too would have left citing "creative differences"...Nobody wants to sit on the bench for 10 years...

It's just a shytty way to round off a great legacy in music .

You had me agreeing with you until about here

but let's be real . . it's Dr. Dre . . Mr. ' Take 21 Questions off the album, it's a flop" . . mixed with Jimmy "I'll sign Chief Keef because I can" Iovine . . of course they wanted him rapping about guns. And they woulda made him huge off it. They have vested interests in prisons.

Canibus took what Rakim was doing to the next level...
But that is a discussion for the Canibus thread that is already going...

Rakim has got to be one of the MOST overrated rappers in the History of the genre...How can Rakim be considered GOAT when he couldn't even compete with the TITANS of the 90's...Dude is in the same age cohort as Jay Z, KRS 1, Kool G Rap...

All these other legends COMPETED in the the 90's with the young bulls who were wrecking sh+t left right and centre...

Rakim and Big Daddy Kane are always mentioned as GOATS, yet they were UNABLE to compete in the GOAT ERA...hahaha...

If that is NOT overrated, then what is...?

Hip Hop Blasphemy. Rakim and KRS are one and two on my list. I agree Canibus took that metaphysical shyt to another level, but withouout Ra, KRS, Public Enemy their is no bis, no conscious hip hop. Kane was an ill spitter, but I kinda feel he is overrated. He was a good MC though, could get the crowd hype, drop some bars, etc. But he doesn't inspire me like the others do.

KRS 1 >>>> Rakim...

Rakim was irrelevant in the GOAT era...I remember, in the 90's, people talking about Rakim like if he was ancient...

Compare Rakim to Nas and Jay Z, these dudes are competing with the younglings...They are releasing material (I think is personally wack) but at least they are visible...In some cases, they are mentoring the younglings, the hip hop public is interested in their opinions about current events...

They are making way more money than when they first came through the gates...

Where was Rakim when the Wu Tang introduced us to the 36 Chambers, Snoop was doing it Doggystyle, 2Pac was going against the world, Nas was being Illmatic, Mobb Deep was making QB infamous, Biggie was ready to die and etc...

He is overrated...

I think KRS and Rakim are interchangeable. Dude openly said he took 5 years off to be with his family and to be a good father to his son during his childhood. He did his thing with three straight classics, Ra cemented his legacy before Nas even got in the game. Lets not even put Jay in the same conversation as Rakim please. Rakim would never sell-out, and his differences with Dre are a testament to that.

At the time, I remember feeling like Dre is who was going to bring Rakim back into the spot light. But with the delays, and the changes that happened in that time frame, it didn't happen.

Rakim came from an era, and that was what everyone pretty much associated with him. During that time, Dre could do no wrong. If the choices were, we keep doing it your way, and you saw the results, or you follow what Aftermath was pumping out at the time. I saw it as his last shot to resurrect his career. I doubt Dre told him to go that route though. Its one thing to tell someone, lets make your rhymes more grimier and raw; touch this subject matter, and do this. VS making it sound as if though Dre just wanted to sound cliche.

Dre gave that nikka more buzz than his local ass ever had with that throwaway track he allowed Rakim to be featured on........

Rakim as a NY nikka probably made a pride decision, you know people in the hood was turning up their nose to Rakim recording on west beats
