I believe he did mismanage him yes, he wanted him to do gangsta rap but Ra didn't have to do that. You have one of the greatest Hip Hop artists in your hands, let him do him, help and guide but he ain't a gangsta rapper. If Seventh Seal lyrics was on Dre beats people would of liked it and it would have sold well too.

U made that up breh, Dre wanted Rakim to let his nuts hang by doin somethin stupid, talkin, braggin and talkin shyt to his peers when the song start givin intros n shyt

rakim said in a old interview that when a beat come on he already knows what he wanna do on the beat, dre in his ear tryin to get him to be extra on some

This video says it all. Dre had Truth Hurts, a real voice, snarling and grunting on camera and Ra talking about kilo's.

KRS 1 >>>> Rakim...

Rakim was irrelevant in the GOAT era...I remember, in the 90's, people talking about Rakim like if he was ancient...

Compare Rakim to Nas and Jay Z, these dudes are competing with the younglings...They are releasing material (I think is personally wack) but at least they are visible...In some cases, they are mentoring the younglings, the hip hop public is interested in their opinions about current events...

They are making way more money than when they first came through the gates...

Where was Rakim when the Wu Tang introduced us to the 36 Chambers, Snoop was doing it Doggystyle, 2Pac was going against the world, Nas was being Illmatic, Mobb Deep was making QB infamous, Biggie was ready to die and etc...

He is overrated...
I remember when it his like 95' nikkas was already calling him a "old school rapper" :russ::dead:

That's the point I am trying to make..Let us put it in perspective...

(1) Rakim is around the same age as Jay Z...
(2) Rakim released multiple albums (4) before Jay Z released his first one with Reasonable Doubt...
(3) Jay Z was 27 when he released his first album, and Rakim was 28...
(4) Rakim was only 28 and being referred to as an extinct dinosaur...Calling him an "old school rapper" as you so correctly stated...Meanwhile, dude was only 3 years older than 2Pac, 4 years older than Biggie, 5 years older than Nas...

How can your rap career be finished at 28, when there are rappers who are 30 and releasing their first albums...?

Rakim is OVERRATED...Even Canibus produced more music (whether you like it or not) and he is far MORE superior than Rakim when it comes to that pseudo-scientific lyrical rap...

If Rakim was really GOAT status, people would be calling him "old school" today, and not back in 93...

People like J Cole, Asap Rock, Drake and etc should be the ones calling Rakim "old school" today...

But Rakim was being called "old school" by his own peers...

Dude is the Vince Carter of rap...NOT GOAT material...But we do recognize the talent...It just wasn't good enough to be mentioned with Bird, Magic, Jordan, Shaq, Kobe, LeBron...

:upsetfavre: @ Calling Rakim the Vince Carter of Rap but yet he had dropped two classics before he was probably 20yrs old. One of the most influential, sampled and bitten rappers ever is Vince Carter status :usure:. The irony in all of this is the so called rappers that are the Birds, Magics, Jordan's, and etc would have him ranked in their top 5-10 more than likely.

I didn't make it up cause I heard Rakim say it. He wanted him to do both, boast more about his status and be on some more gangsta/hardcore shyt.

Canibus took what Rakim was doing to the next level...
But that is a discussion for the Canibus thread that is already going...

Rakim has got to be one of the MOST overrated rappers in the History of the genre...How can Rakim be considered GOAT when he couldn't even compete with the TITANS of the 90's...Dude is in the same age cohort as Jay Z, KRS 1, Kool G Rap...

All these other legends COMPETED in the the 90's with the young bulls who were wrecking sh+t left right and centre...

Rakim and Big Daddy Kane are always mentioned as GOATS, yet they were UNABLE to compete in the GOAT ERA...hahaha...

If that is NOT overrated, then what is...?

:camby: man you had a couple decent points but most of what you are saying in this thread is complete BS

Dre gave that nikka more buzz than his local ass ever had with that throwaway track he allowed Rakim to be featured on........

Rakim as a NY nikka probably made a pride decision, you know people in the hood was turning up their nose to Rakim recording on west beats

:heh: Ra started the trend with r&b/rap collabo's by having a monster hit with Jody Watley, he did it the right way also by spitting some real shyt...folks have been trying to create that magic for years and still cant get it right, Ra had to show everybody how it was done again by doing the Truth Hurts collabo

I'm pretty sure all of his albums with Eric went gold not too long after they came out. The 18th letter ra's first solo joint went platinum so that proves right there folks didn't really give a shyt about Eric B.

The news with Dr. Dre was a big/major deal considering the status of both Dre and Ra.

saying Ra is just local is total nonsense :heh:

the thing is, the only person we can really compare all of the mc's to is the game
is someone really going to sit here and tell me that the game is better than bishop lamont, hittman, rakim, and the last emperor?:deadmanny:
of course not. he just had no career path and was more easily molded than the other ones.
no coincidence, he was also the least lyrical out of all of them.
i know i'm not the only one that remembers hittman at the end of the forgot about dre video???
