Did the NBA product suddenly suck when viewership dropped by 50% when MJ 1st retired?

Football doesn’t function like basketball in the slightest so there’s no point in comparing honestly
Baseball and Football have generational fans. I lived in a time where the Celtic Lakers rivalry history was just as loud and Magic & Bird. Same when it was Pistons vs Celtics and Sixers vs Celtics. The NBA used to build fans along team lines.

It’s a poor model breh. The league is forced to reinvent itself anytime a great retires. Meanwhile, I can be on vacation in Jamaica and see a family from Grandparents to newborns dressed in random Steelers gear from head to toe.

The NBA doesnt offer generational fanmanship outside of NY, LA, Boston, or Philly.

Facts...and shyt like the Luka trade doesn't help.

NBA/ESPN etc., doesn't do enough to cultivate fans outside the coasts. In the NFL, guys either stay put or follow the money. In the NBA, guys always "seem" to end up in preferred coastal destinations. Everything feels scripted and forced instead of organic. Baseball and hockey feel the most natural. Shyt just happens and it's usually not that predictable.

NFL will tilt the scales with refs (holding...you can legit call that whenever you want to fukk up momentum) BUT they put A LOT more weight on teams rather than markets. Green Bay is a tiny azz market, but they're generally considered among the Top 5 franchises in league history. That would never happen in the NBA.

Stop kidding yourself

This is why a group of old heads that are no longer top 5 still got the league in a chokehold while guys like Shai get ignored . That’s a problem ..it just creates a culture of dikkriding ..like what we have now

The Lions was ass for 1000 years and nikkas still rocked with them

The Pistons won three titles in 20 years and don’t get a third of the loyalty of them OR the Tigers .

Thats what the league needs to fix
Other sports have 50 players, some of those sports players with masks on that you barely even see.

The star thing will always be a thing in basketball. Just due to the single impact of one player.

I don’t know why people are so eager for the nba to be like other sports. It seems more like the NFL and MLB are trying to create nba level superstar celebrities. Hell they made Taylor Swift/Kelce their MVPeople for two straight seasons

Because other sports stars arent being smeared and even when their products are ass, its not viewed as such.

You act as if we dont want whats good for the league.

NBA fans are often more casual fans than hardcore fans. And it centers around player stanning. Other leagues cultivate fan allegiance to their team.
David Stern marketed the players. it started with Magic and Bird and exploded with MJ

The NBA was a coke infested league with bad ratings

The model of focusing on the players even though it help saved the league also fukked up the discourse around the league

They were obsessed with finding the "next MJ"

Players like LeBron come in and get compared incessantly to MJ it's awful

Magic and Bird were equal to the mystique that was the Lakers and Celtics historic rivalry. So he was lucky. The NBA left CBS, he took the marketing reigns at NBC & gave MJ his own propaganda minister in Ahmad Rashad. :mjlol:

It worked so as long as MJ played. shyt died when he left.

People forget that Kobe, Vince and others paid the “next MJ” price when Stern got lazy trying to dip in the well again.
