From 98 til 2000 DMX was the biggest and best rapper out of NY.

I think it's only because of his recent run ins with the law and his out of the booth exploits that heads get it twisted.

This man had 2 number one albums in less than one year. Still, to this day, no rapper has done that.

He was bigger than Jay Z at one point. Think about that!

I'm a big fan of X and his first 3 albums were really great, but I do feel like he gets somewhat over-rated. He wasn't a very great lyricist (and it seems like a lot of people on this board get overly fixated on that aspect of rap music), and I feel like a lot of his music gets somewhat repetitive and sounds the same. Still love him though.

But I don't agree with the thread title. I think 50 Cent has filled that role adequately. Although DMX's first 3 albums > 50's first 3 by far, 50 has continuously been putting out solid music (just not another classic album), and his recent stuff definitely trumps whatever recent stuff DMX has put out. I've said it before but I feel like BISD is under-rated too.
