Back in MIA
It's blackness cut up, seasoned and cooked for the tastes of white people. The networks love it because it brings in a wide audience (mostly white people), advertising dollars and it allows them to confidently talk about 'representation'.

Martin or In Living Color would go straight to BET if they came out in 2020.

Martin
Cosby Show
In Living Color
Fresh Prince
Parent Hood
Jamie Foxx Show
New York Undercover
Steve Harvey Show
Wayans Bros

Would be deemed too toxic in 2020 and non-inclusive....

Will Smith would be seen as a predator since he didn't ask permission to rap to women....

Martin and Jamie would be called transphobic....

Theo would be put in skinny jeans and Vanessa would be swirling....

Steve Harvey wouldn't be a music teacher because they cut the music program....

I havent met a single cac who watched martin growing up

I havent met a single cac who watched jamie Foxx growing up

Fresh prince, Cosby, family matters sure, but those were family shows. Non family black shows were not watched by cacs like that

White people watched Martin
White people knew about Martin
Did they watch it in droves?
Nope
But Martin was universally known as THEE Black show at the time
This is why it was referenced in shows like Married Children

Let’s keep it a buck...crackers had no clue Jamie Foxx Show, The Parker’s, Living Single etc even existed

No honkey was watching ANYTHING on UPN or The WB

Despite what youre saying i havent met a cac who watched martin growing up. And even if i did, its beside the point.

I said they didnt understand it becuz it wasnt made for them. :dwillhuh:

The whole point of this thread is that current black shows are made to appeal to whites more.

Yes white ppl knew martin existed and referenced it. Good for them. I know friends exists but i cant relate to an all white new york where everyone lives in massive apartments and never works:skip:

The same way that Communications Act In The 90s fukked up Black Music something similar happened with TV

There are no Black networks where shows can be seen that fit that niche. If you want to be greenlit nowadays you’re on the major networks. Black art doesn’t have the luxury a playing a lane for the most part I suppose

I dont disagree with what got us here, im just saying we are here now.

I, for one, dont like the overly done black stereotypes u see in reality tv. Oddly enough, some of the most profitable"black" tv shows are reality.

I bet you can film 20 seasons of love and hip hop for the cost of 1 season of Westworld

I agree with the premise. There's a certain style that shows like Martin and The Wayans Bros. had back then that no longer exists. Even The Fresh Prince had that style despite being a family show.

If someone can break down why that's the case, I'd like to hear it. :jbhmm:

Living single. I’m yet to meet a non black person who remembers that show :hubie:

David Schwimmer remembers. :troll:

Its full of forced "wokeness" and short on actual humor.
A lot of Black ppl that like these shows only like them because it shows a successful Black family dynamic, and they are worried at how Black ppl are viewed on tv by white ppl.
