Question, for those who grew up in the 80s was the whole HIV/AIDS epidemic bigger than than COVID?

At it's Height, were times crazier than COVID? How long were people going crazy? What effects did it have on people, where people rushing to the stores to buy toilet paper :mjlol:

People may have been going crazy for a longer period of time, but at their heights, it's no where near as bad as COVID.

And this COVID time period is still early compared to the AIDS epidemic.

Nah, don't get me wrong, plenty of people was scared of that shyt, that's why you see & hear so many references to condoms in late '80s/early '90s Hip-Hop.

It was scary, especially after Magic Johnson came down with that shyt and when Eazy-E did, it was CRAZY. They had that whole "America Is Dying Slowly" record with Wu-Tang and all those people.

But there's never been anything like COVID.

COVID literally shut down all of society.

That shyt had EVERYBODY locked down, rationing food, and santizing shyt like crazy :heh:

Plus, AIDS was kinda focused on gay folks, drug addicts, prostitutes, and people like that.

If you weren't doing that, then you were mostly straight.

So COVID was a whole different beast

Nah, COVID was the major leagues compared to elementary school playground recess for the special kids in this scenario. Not even a comparison. Gay man disease, u could avoid it easy

There is a lot of stuff that came out during the 80s that are good, music, movies, shows. But as a poor black kid in a black suburb of a black city (ATL), I remember my mom used to beat the shiet out of me and I don't remember much else.

There is nothing else to say :manny:

84 baby. My memory of the 80s starts around 88-89. I do remember the early nineties being pretty much a continuation of 80s fashion and pop culture. In my opinion the 90s really didn't start till about 1993-1994.

One thing I do remember about the 80s is that Jordan was a big deal back then and everybody knew he had next, but he wasn't looked at as the GOAT like we see him today. He used to be heavily criticized as somebody who was great, but couldn't win a ring.

Watching MJ: Come Fly With Me hits different because the story told in that doc is before MJ won his first ring.

In terms of the 3 Mike's. I'd rank it by this in popularity.

1. Michael Jackson (by a very wide margin)
2. Mike Tyson
3. Michael Jordan. (He didn't become GOD status until 91 when he won his first title)

You would call and leave a message. You know that thing that happens when you actually call somebody, it rings for a while, then you hear a message about not being available and you immediately hang up before it's finished?

Back in the day you would leave a message saying who you were, what time you called, what the call was for, and a time they could call you back.

And there was a separate machine that did it for you.:gladbron:
And it used cassette tapes:gladbron:

And you had to erase the tapes yourself:gladbron:

And if you planned to meet up with a person and they didn't show up, they either didn't like you or they were dead.

I stil remember my dad's answering machine message: "I'm away from the phone, but if you leave a number, and a brief message, I'll call you back as soon as possible.....*BEEEEEEEP*"

We didn't live in a bad neighborhood per se, but he knew it was smart to not say "I'm not home" on a home answering machine.

Economy was trash for most of it. Gas was cheaper than now but minimum wage was like 2 or 3 dollars. :deadrose: So it would still hit your pockets heavy if you weren't wealthy or good with money.

Golden Age of Hip Hop. Crime was a problem in many major cities thanks to crack(basically a cheap alternative to cocaine that provided higher profit margins to dealers) and resulting drug territory wars.

Everybody was scared of hiv aids. People thought you could get it from hugging people. :deadrose: It was openly viewed as a gay male disease because that's who the early cases were applying to.

Flipside? Indoor malls which I liked. No cell phones so folks paid more attention to surroundings and it was easier to strike up convos with random folks if you wanted to.

You can see in many folks eyes nowadays the thought of interacting face to face terrifies them. :deadrose: Fast food and some cereals tasted better. A lot of cheap ingredients flooded the markets over the years and changed that.

I was a kid in the 80s but my parents were living the fast life for sure. Pretty sure they used to do coke when they partied 🎉 .

As a kid it was awesome because we played outside pretty much from sun up to sun down. An adults weren’t so annoyed by kids the way they are now so if we were getting into mischief they’d just tell us to cut it out. No calling the cops on kids. Most people knew our parents and could just go tell them what they saw.

I feel like the food was trash though. a lot of microwaveable meals and boxed meals. Our parents were first generation of convenience consumption and they happily obliged.

  • lot of house parties, i remember sneaking out my room to see what’s happenin and being told to go back to my room and play my game.
  • It was dangerous as shyt in DC(murder Capitol) but I remember getting up putting on some clothes and goin out side early in the morning and riding my bike all day until for sun up to sun down. And the ice cream truck was parked in my complex so I didn’t even have to come back inside to eat or drink. Hot dog and soda/chips was 1.50.
  • Clear Pepsi was drink back then.
  • Dope/crack epidemic was terrible. Being outside all day, you had to be aware of needles on the ground and not stepping on them.
  • A lot classic movies came out back then
  • The Disney on ice were better back then. Took my son to one a couple of years ago and I was very letdown and he fell asleep twice
