And LL’s reason for going at Canibus was so fukkin lame. He was offended by Bus saying “you L let me borrow that mic off your arm”?

I mean did LL really sit down and think about that? Is it more likely this kid is trying to disrespect me OR is it likely he is in awe at being on a record with one of the greatest rappers of all time and he’s just being witty and showing love?:jbhmm:
:krs: This is the debate right here! LL is a cultural icon. You don't come out your face and borrow nothing. You lucky to be on the rekkkkid! :krs:

LL won.

Not because of popularity. Jay was way more popular when he was going at Nas, and he lost, lol.

We all gave 'Bis props for his record back then, it was funny, but his career was effectively over after this beef. LL went on to sell more records than he was previously. Dude went double platinum off the back of this "beef". Then he dropped the GOAT album, went platinum again and had the #1 album in the country.

Canibus was try'na book shows in NYC at the time, and couldn't get anyone to show up, lol. DJ Riz was deejaying for him at the time, and he said they couldn't get anyone to pay $25 at small venues to see him. His career was basically over after the LL situation. LL went on to sell more records and do more movies, and TV shows. You win battles by shutting people down, or saying things in battles that are true and cause the other MC to change course. Canibus didn't have the resume to diss a legend. LL was a battle-tested rapper already and knew how to approach it because he's been in other battles with actual legends before. All that battle did, was make him a stronger artist and energize him for a few more albums.

Wyclef said LL won too, lol. And that it was a "bad move" to go at L. Only legends can battle legends. You can't be a rookie and think you're going to diss a legend and it's going to work out. That year for Canibus was definitely a "grand opening, grand closing" situation for him. He was over after that.

Thats all true but lets not act like LL didnt have a HUGE machine behind him pushing him, he was one of their first artists. U know the story about Lyor & nem trying to control the votes regarding the battle on Hot 97? Def Jam had way more to lose if LL lost

They were signed to the same label though, lol.

Canibus was signed directly to Universal. LL was on Def Jam, which was under Universal. That's how 'Bis got on "4, 3, 2, 1". They were label mates. Canibus said that he signed with Universal because they offered him the most money. Wyclef always said that Universal was making sure they played the video for "Second Round KO" every 15 minutes on BET. They made the diss an actual single and promoted it crazy. Had Mike Tyson in the video and all that. Cool J's diss joint wasn't even on any of his albums, lol. Universal tried to use the beef with LL to propel Canibus, put mad money behind it, and it still didn't work. Dude just didn't have a following like that.

That's why LL's line where he said, "Ask Canibus, he ain't understanding this. Cause ninety-nine percent of his fans don't exist" was so potent. It was true! LOL!!

True but lets not act like Universal were hands on with their artists especially in hip-hop. Def Jam had business with folks @ Hot. U know
Lyor & nem was running in & out that muthafukking building to keep that relationship tight.

Same Def Jam behind the scenes politicing that was done to control the Ether/Super Ugly battle.
Funny style both times.
The lengths people are going to deny reality in this thread brings a smile to face. Dudes might as well put on the red nose and be full circus clowns.

It was no contest, but they announced it as 51% to Ether or some crazy shyt, so Jay could save face.

The top hip hop radio station had to have respect for promotional budget that Def Jam had, and how much of the went to Hot 97

If anything Hot 97 was against Jay for him promoting whatever rival station was during that period.

that’s why he said

since I will not lose they tried to help him cheat

One of the most even battles ever. I originally thought Bus won, took me a few years to realize LL won. Bus had the shock value, but L was more calculated with his diss, and the fact that he didn't release it right away and as time passed...99% of his fans didn't exist. The lines just hit harder as time went on.

theres more to making music than just lyrics. not saying that lyrics is all cannibus relied on in this battle, but dudes saying cannibus won are always the one who are stuck on reading bars.

and yes, nelly beat KRS. it has nothing to do with who is more popular. nelly and the 1998 version of LL cool j(who was "old" and borderline pop at this point) werent even all that popular in the sector of people who cared about battles. yall confusing it with how it is today with social media where you have casual pop fans and companies weighing in on battles. it wasnt like that back then.

simply put, nelly had better disses than KRS.
LL slightly had better disses than cannibus......and i think more focus at this point, should be on the fact that this was arguably the greatest battle ever.

I just assume Mike never heard the line or never ran into him lol

of course mike heard the line.

hes a hip-hop head and the record was huge. plus he was friends with LL - who was admittedly hurt when he saw tyson in the video.

anyone know how / why Mike ended up doing that intro?

probably money.

back when mike was banned from boxing.

Anybody saying LL won either wasn't there...or just ran with that bullshyt because Hot 97 and Def Jam tried their best to convince you that LL's response was up to par, lol, which was laughable. Canibus smoked this man's boots and it wasn't even close...and I love L, pause.

hot 97??? you do realize that nobody outisde of new york and north jersey knew or cared about what was going on at hot 97, right??

i'll tell ya man. new yorkers really think theyre the be all/end all.

:mjlol:

Disappointed in the plea copping about a Rap BATTLE, where it's obvious who the winner was.

Common beat Cube
Nas beat Jay Z
Canibus beat LL

:dwillhuh:

ice cube didnt even get to respond before farrakhan squashed the beef.

yall need to stop that chit.

One more thing. Let me end this thread ABRUPTLY.

“Well, lemme tell you somethin: you might got mo cash than me
But you ain't got the skills to eat a nikkas ass like me”

:scust::mjlol:

i always crack up at this.

the way his voice lowered in shame when he spit that bar.

if only this came out 6 years later, so he could say "no homo" afterwards. he wouldve spit that line with more conviction.

Whats this massive machine that got LL to win the battle?
Cannibus shyt was on rap city every fukking day
I heard the LL shyt maybe twice
Was the LL shyt pushed as a single?

Folks just aint expect LL to come like that so it hyped the song a little bit, same with ether folks counted Nas out so it added a lil extra to it
2nd round knockout was on bet everyday cannibus was bodying everything nobody thought LL was coming like that

THIS!!!! THIS!!!

people still running in here talking about some machine.
then when you call them out on it, they dont respond.

cannibus was the one with a machine behind his diss track. his video was even getting played on planet groove!!! for the young dudes in here - planet groove was the flagship BET show at the tme.
meanwhile, LL's joint was basically just something for the radio mix-shows at night.

and yea, youre spot on with the Nas comparison.
