Do you remember these two festivals? I don’t remember 1994 much aside from seeing it on the cable black box but 1999 pretty clearly. As a young bul watching 1999 on MTV was dope sets by George Clinton, DMX, Roots, Rage Against the Machine (the notorious flag burning), Korn, and as much

Now to get to the fukkery/riots: reading back then after and reading online before the thread to fact check/refresh my memory, the promoters and vendor got hella greedy which pissed everyone off as the weekend went on. To quote Huffington Post:

It didn’t help matters that Fred Durst said in interviews before the event that LB’s performance was gonna make history (which it did for all the wrong reasons). Prices were out of control bordering on extortion. Between the heat, the pervasive feeling that people were being taken advantage of and the mix of music it just seemed to bring out the animal in everyone.

I'd go on to say that I think the trouble really started Saturday night. Limp Bizkit came on and when they played "Break Stuff" that's the point it boiled over and people started doing just that. The board that Fred Durst crowd surfed on was a piece of the barrier separating the people from the sound equipment. By the time RATM came on people were ready to riot. It's not their fault, they played their music and spread the same message as they always do, just this time enough people were fed up. Little known fact that the biggest factor that contributed to the riots were that more than half the security crews quit by Saturday night. It was poor planning on the organizers. There wasn't enough security and between the heat and the crowds the staff got upset about the lack of breaks. People were acting wild around them and they wanted to be part of it too. Going into the final night it exploded.

On Sunday, some dumbass decided to give the hostile candles to wave during a song in RHCP’s set. Hostile crowd decided to start lighting the candles and made bonfires. MTV had been covering shyt all weekend and darted during once the fires got out of hand. The PPV broadcast continued on.

Now that I’ve refreshed your memory, what does The Coli remember about both festivals? Did any of y’all attend one or both? Who do y’all feel was at fault for 1999 getting out of hand?

I thought the first was cool cuz white folk was cutting up something serious, but by 99 I was annoyed as fukk because we kept hearing our event...Freaknik ...was rumored to be shut down.

MTV never showed DMX set

They didn’t show the RHCP set either cause they broke out once the fires happened. One of their feed towers got destroyed during LB’s performance the previous night
