I don't personally think tanking ever really helps unless you're getting a LeBron type player. When the Cavs tanked for Lebron it payed off in the end but it's rare that drafting lottery players is what brings a team up.

Usually the players you have already in place get taught how to lose and when that top pick comes in it just builds more losing habits.

but did it really pay off in the end??

I'm not big into conspiracies...but there is no way in hell you are going to convince me that David Stern taking control of the Hornets...DENYING the Lakers to trade for Chris Paul only to ALLOW the CLIPPERS to trade for him...and then having the HORNETS GET THE NUMBER 1 PICK...was a random set of circumstances...
