Do you think there is a relationship between a persons taste in music & intelligence?

it's all subjective tho. what's numbskull to one is enlightening to another. coldplay's lyrics are no more thoght provoking than Jeezy's
like Just Blaze said (i think it was him) Quincy jones can lead an orchestra but he'd be lost on a mpc machine :yeshrug:

well no not anymore ...because they went mainstream and sold out to an extent.

but there first two albums "Parachutes" and "A Rush of Blood to The Head" got them a lot of comparisons to Radiohead at the time. and we all know how cerebral Radioheads music tends to be...

Actually, there is a correlation! They did a study on this.

The article talks about music and personality, and it suggests that people who like complex music (opera, jazz, etc.) are likely to be more intelligent than people who like simple music (country, sound track, etc.). Here is the excerpt:

Music preferences also appear to be influenced by cognitive ability. The relationship between cognitive ability and music preferences is consistent with the idea that people prefer music that provides optimal levels of stimulation. Berlyne (1971, 1974) hypothesized that individuals prefer aesthetic stimuli that produce moderate amounts of stimulation to objects that produce too much or too little stimulation. Previous research on aesthetic preferences in literature and visual arts has supported this notion, and this suggests that individual differences in cognitive complexity moderate preferences for particular aesthetic stimuli. Whereas cognitively complex individuals tend to prefer complex aesthetic stim- uli, less cognitively complex individuals tend to prefer simple aesthetic stimuli (Barron, 1955; Frances, 1976; Kammann, 1966). The relationship between intelligence and preference for complex music supports this previous work and suggests that the optimal level of stimulation for highly intelligent individuals is produced by complex music whereas the optimal level of stimulation for less intelligent individuals is produced by comparatively simpler music.

You don't have to read the article, it's kinda long. I just wanted to point out the important part.

From what I interpreted (which may not be right), it seems like the article is saying people with higher cognitive abilities, or how quickly/deeply you interpret something, enjoy more complex, layered music that stimulates the mind rather than calm, cool, simple music.

I don't think this particularly applies to hip-hop. You can have simple ass instrumentation with basic claps and kicks but deep, profound lyrics laced over it. And vice versa. This relates more to people who enjoy classical music vs. those who like country and rock.

As far as what I think, in hip-hop exclusively, there is zero correlation. cuz, lets be honest, nobody listens to hip-hop in pursuit of knowledge or arithmetics and science :comeon: They might want their minds stimulated or picked apart, but conscious hip-hop vs. ignant hip-hop speaks volumes on the artists and not so much the listener. Obviously, its more likely that an avid Talib Kweli fan is more intelligent than a Chief Keef stan, but that's more about upbringing and the actual person, not their taste in music.

i personally think people who listen to "money ...hoes...weed" rap and nothing BUT that are either lower intelligence or were taught growing that they needed to dumb themselves down. i can't see any highly intelligent person not getting tried of the repetition of that music with the quickness.....

:ehh:

That's not a bad point. Even Ke$ha admitted that she didn't listen to her own music for that reason. She also got a 1410 on her SATs (using the old model) so I guess there is at least a correlation there.

:heh:

But that's..... interesting... makes you wonder :leostare:

Usually people who have to listen to rap that has a message, talks about black plight and the ills of society are full of shyt.

That I do know.

Please elaborate breh....

:skip: Please stop talking. All music is repetitive.

All our parents did was listen to R&B and they talk about either 1 or 2 topics every song

Why do you keep trying to tie what people like for entertainment to intelligence

:heh:

Bruh, usually the rappers these "hiphopheads" champion have the same destructive music as everyone else.

Just because they like to talk about the downfalls sparingly doesn't mean their subject matter is better.

Plus, they ignore the fact that people like to listen to music for different reasons.

I wouldnt say intelligence but definately a relationship between eclectic and eccentric music tastes and habits. I stay away from nikkas who blast hiphop then put on rock n 1920 jazz music.

Look for generalizations, in everything.

From The Westside With Love
We not saying you cant enjoy it, but if its ALL you listen to 100% of the time then yea.. you tend to be a lil on the slower side.

I love listening to waka flocca, but thats not the only nikka I listen to. One minute I'll be bumping NY State of mind and Shootouts by Nas, the next minute I'll bump Thug Luv then switch to Watch My Power Spread.

thats not true either.

it's about how you use the words/music, much much more than what words/music you use.

music doesn't truly need to be smart or dumb, to be good.

if we're gonna go off what's society has dictated that "smart people listen to"...we'd all be fukking idiots just cause we don't exclusively listen to classical music and opera.

I know lawyers, doctors, teachers, engineers, bankers, entrepreneurs, etc. who are avid Jeezy/Waka/T.I./Meek Mill/2 Chainz/Juvenile/etc. fans and who will go ham spittin' lyrics if any of their shyt is ever played. Cop all the CDs, mixtapes, etc.

The benefits of hanging around (educated) black people :smugbiden: I'm a lucky guy :heh:
