Basketball is a sport. The NBA is a business.

Doc Rivers coached his team throughout the season and playoffs. He didn't refuse to show up or coach the team throughout all of this so he didn't quit on them. After the season is completely over, it's fair game to look at other coaching and playing opportunities for everyone. The NBA is not some rec league where a coach/player can just up and leave his current team during the season to coach or play for a better one.

People are saying that he quit on the Celtics is just flat out hilarious. The contract stipulations that a coach signs is different from a player's contract. The media knows that most people aren't really familiar with some of the business side of sports, so they try to exploit players and coaches when they make business decisions that will not be widely accepted.

The media loves to stir up controversy. It's part of their job!

Really? :dwillhuh:

You do realize there was a no compete clause in Doc's contract?

Yeah.

There's a reason coaches just can't quit and join another team.

There's a reason teams need permission to even speak to assistants under contract with another team.

There's a reason teams get compensation when they let a coach out of its contract to join another team.

Don't fall for the okie doke. Reread what I typed about the media and their bullsh1t. Sports media is notorious for this type of thing. The Celtics wanted to get rid of contracts for draft picks. It's a business move, nothing more nothing less.

Paul Pierce was with the Celtics when they were straight up terrible, but notice they didn't bat an eye to trade him out of there. Nobody is making a big deal out of that right? I wonder why?

Lets be honest, if you ask Pierce if he wants to go through a rebuild like this with the Celtics in his last few years or play with KG in Brooklyn, he chooses Brooklyn everytime.

He said he'll sign a one day contract and retire a Celtic regardless. He's an expiring anyways, you can never rule out that he comes back next year.

So we gonna act like ESPN aint trying this feud happen?

Why would you ask Doc's opinion on that anyway? and then immediatley go to Simmons for a rebuttal.

fukk that

It's not like Simmons is a Clippers season ticket holder and Doc is the new Clippers coach or anything convenient like that

Basically this whole thread is saying that Doc showed no loyalty to the Celtics and quit on them. Boston didn't even attempt to make Paul Pierce an offer even though he was there when they were horrible and when they were great. Some may say they didn't show loyalty to him. I look at it through a business lens.

My point is you can't say that Doc Rivers quit on Boston and then accept the fact that Boston let one of it's best players in franchise history to just leave without offering him anything. Even if they knew he wasn't going to accept it, it would've shown that they really appreciated him for playing with them for all those years. Notice how quick you are to accepting the trade. Doc made a business move just like the Celtics made when they traded one of their best players ever. You don't see the problem here?

They could have traded Pierce to Milwaukee or Cleveland.

They did right by Paul Pierce, he's with KG, in a big market contending team not far from his home. At the end of the day, it's a business, and as much as I would have loved to see him retire a Celtic, I understand why it couldn't happen.

You're not understanding the anger towards Doc isn't in him leaving, it's how he handled leaving. If he was just honest about everything, nobody would have had a problem with it.

The Celtics agreed to let Doc look at other opportunities. Tell me exactly how did Doc handle this situation incorrectly or immorally? A coach can't just leave or even talk to a different team without his current team agreeing to it.

OMG.

Are you retarded? Read back the more logical posts of this thread.

It's not that Doc left, it's how he handled leaving. I'm done with you. I've already explained this and you keep going back to the same played out shyt.

What, specifically, bothers you about how he handled leaving?

(and for Bill Simmons, it IS that Doc left)

The C's just traded their coach and 2 of their best players that were key parts in a championship 3 years ago, the team was easily the top story Thursday.

Was he not supposed to talk about the team?

i mean just cover it without the emotion and histrionics. this was an over the hill team that had to blow up any way. calling doc a quitter was unnecessary, and coming from a boston fanboy, it was going to cause things to get a bit "extra".
