I don't think Adele has a soulful voice. She has a nice voice but it's very Adult contemporary easy listening and Jazzy.

When you compare her to soul greats you see her voice isn't very soulful.

people have complained about her live performances on social media :francis:

I don't think she sounds "black" at all but I'm def in the minority there - they played her video on BET soul every muthafukkin day :stopitslime:

Do ppl really complain about her tho? nikkas in here acting like she's the second coming of Whitney or something.

I think nikkas are just fascinated that she sounds better than MOST Of the Beckys currently making music.

Meh. My problem with Adele is she is not necessarily "raw talent". Adele is literally a product of a "hit factory", the BRIT School of Performing Arts. Hence why she sounds like: Marsha Ambrosois, Leona Lewis, Jessie J, Amy Winehouse...they all sound like they had the same vocal coaches because they did. A school created by the government and funded by the British record industry, lol. They were manufactured at a school teaching them how to sing like "Black Americans". And we eat that shyt up every.damn.time , comparing our naturally gifted Black people against robotic, mediocre whites who were TRAINED to sound like US.:mjlol:
That's why I'm like how are they using clearly black American speech patterns and y'all don't even talk like that? :dahell:

I much prefer them using their own accent and expanding on that.

Do we expect white people to not prefer white people?

Her success comes from being white and therefore appealing to white, brown and Asian audiences.

ANOTHER part is her being BRITISH. Americans love their blue eyed soul coming from exotic whites with attractive English accents. A lot of the white soul bands from the 70s were British.

Yes I remember Chasing Pavements. I am not a huge fan of Adele but I remember her from that song from the album 19. That 21 (I think) album was the one that was the most successful (Rolling In the Deep). Adele is lucky as fuk but what markets her so good is that she different from the rest but still can do her and be successful. She lacks MAINSTREAM sex appeal that other female artists typically have (particularly white women like Katy Perry, Britney Spears, Taylor Swift, and other race women like Rihanna).

Then she is a white woman that has a SOULFUL HEAVY DISTINCT voice. Sam Smith is another artist who has that soulful voice and somehow people go crazy over white people who sing with that soulful voice. Look how they went off on Sam Smith when he song that song with Mary J Blige. Same when white folks do shyt that blacks do like dance, step, etc. We go off on that and give them high praise. I personally think that Jesse J (who did song with Arianna Grande and Nicki) has a great voice just as good as Adele but she has more sex appeal and stage presence.

Next, she is overweight (no shaming at all), doesn't have much stage presence except her voice, can't or doesn't want to dance, and doesn't have to use any props or gimmicks for attention or shock value (like Lady Gaga). She is so non conventional whereas some see it as refreshing, relatable, and see her as something different. She was a horrible choice for a potential Superbowl halftime and even Adele said she isn't right for a haltime show and rejected it.

But to answer question....of course skin color has something to do with her success...but its other aforementioned factors as well...and it all comes together for Adele. She can do her and still reach different demographics....races, cultures, age groups, genres, genders, etc. Her voice and unconventional attributes helps her to stand out.

Agreed with the above.

I think its clear that her "plain image with the soulful voice" set her apart during an era when it has been expected that female singers should emphasize sex over musicianship (despite a history of successful female artists, ranging from Aretha to Anita Baker, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Roberta Flack, Tracy Chapman, Joan Armatrading, Patrice Rushen, Alanis Morrissette, Joan Jett, Barbara Streisand, and Taylor Swift, demonstrating otherwise).

Also we can't sell her songwriting skills short. "Rolling In The Deep" touched even Aretha to the point of compelling the Queen of Soul herself to cover Adele's composition.

For the past five years or so, it seemed that at every black talent show at a high school, church or community center ("East Orange's Got Talent!") featured at least two girls or young women choosing "Hello" or "Rolling In The Deep" to perform.

Agree about her songwriting ability....she does have a lot of depth to her music as well.

She is compared to other white singers. So her race definitely does help.
