Does Anyone Else Feel Like They've Gotten Dumber?

A few days ago I came to the realization that I feel way "dumber" than I used to compared to ten years ago.

Back when I was in college a decade ago, my mind felt razor sharp. I could slog through dry textbooks without losing focus, I could hold a conversation without using a bunch of filler words, and my memory and information recall was on point.

It seems like now, for the past several years, my mind feels foggy, my thoughts feel jumbled, my speech often sounds stilted and unsure, and my memory feels weak -- unless I'm at work where I need to be "on".

Outside of work, I feel sluggish, lazy, and unmotivated. As a child I loved reading and would devour multiple books in a day, but now I can barely stay focused after reading two pages if I don't wind up falling asleep after 15 minutes into attempting to read a book.

After I get home from work all I feel like doing is making something to eat and zoning out to mindless bullshyt on YouTube until it's time to go to bed.

Rinse, repeat. Day by day.

This shyt's been happening with me since around 2022.

Wtf is going on? :mjcry:

My life stayed pretty much the same after college. Still have to do a lot of the same stuff just as a job now instead of for a class.

Even have homework low key still.

So while i don't feel dumber. there are times when i start to feel burnt out, need to retire early if i can

imagine being 40 years old still stressing about due dates and incomplete assignments, cramming to get shyt done at the last minute for a deadline.

But in all seriousness, consider seeing a doctor.



It could be a dietary imbalance. Docs can run tests to determine whether you have a vitamin deficiency or hormonal deficiency that you were previously unaware of. Both of these can affect your mental acuity


you could also be suffering from undiagnosed depression. Not everybody with that illness expresses it by being suicidal . Others get that unfocused, unmotivated , mental lethargy that you are describing.

I feel the opposite :yeshrug: theres a lot of shyt that I dont know so im always gonna be learning and a student regardless where im at. :yeshrug: sounds like you're going through an ego death
It's not that I don't want to learn more or read more, it's that the will to do it feels gone.

My life felt more optimistic ten years ago, but now after having to go through some much stress and bullshyt just to survive over the years it's like my brain is on "power save mode" or something.

The drive to learn new things and increase my knowledge is still there for me, but it manifests itself in library books that I never wind up reading and a clogged up "watch later" playlist on my YouTube account.

i feel exactly the same :mjcry: I thought it was anhedonia but i still do find pleasure in things, so that's not it. Might be a dopamine issue? I got like 100 audible books that just sitting there because i can't pay attention, not bothered.

It's funny, im progressing in life, making more money and looked at favourably by my work colleagues but yet I feel stupid, slow to pick up on things and somewhat of an imposter

Like you it feel like it takes me longer to pick up things and I self doubt things more when it comes to my learning

Cut out sugar from your diet and start intermittent fasting

Really focus on getting a good night's sleep. Like you gotta prep for that shyt. No phone food at least 40 min before bed. Make sure the room is dark and cool. Take some magnesium glycinate

Make sure you working out (esp cardio) at least 3 times a week. Get that heart rate up so those mitochondria can get busy

Lastly cut down on your screen time

Brain fog had me in a chokehold for about a year and a half. Felt like a shell of my former self. You gotta make some lifestyle changes to shake that shyt :sas1:

It sounds like you lack motivation and have become a lazy slob. However the fact that you equate a lack of drive with becoming dumber means that maybe you are dumber. Or you're naturally dumb, but used to compensate for it with a work ethic that is no longer present. You decide.

Yup this 100%. I still go through it but it becomes mind over matter. I still have my lazy days but forcing yourself to get upnand get shyt done will improve slowly over time.
