Does Kanye wonder if he'll ever be more successful in business than Pharrell?

GQ reports that Jay-Z’s Rocawear clothing label is the proud new owner of the licensing to manufacture and distribute Pharrell Williams’ Billionaire Boys Club clothing line, but Jay-Z says don’t call it a takeover.

"Partnering with @4real4rell on BBC" follow him.. (Not "buying" as GQ erroneously reported.)

Mr. Carter

Buying the rights to manufacture and sell a clothing line sounds like buying the label to us, but since details of the deal were vague, it’s possible that Williams still has a significant role in the label creatively, or even from a business perspective, and that Rocawear is simply providing extra financial backing.

There are a lot of details that could make a difference, but for both parties it seems like a win/win. We haven’t heard about Billionaire Boys Club struggling, but Jay-Z’s been able to successfully maintain the Rocawear streetwear label for some time, and that’s no small feat. As tough as it might be to keep pace with changing musical tastes and dominate the charts, it’s equally challenging for a streetwear label to keep its cool for an extended period of time.

In 2007, Iconix Brand Group acquired the rights to the label, netting Jay-Z $204 million. Under the terms of the deal, Jay-Z maintained his stake in the label and continued to oversee marketing, licensing and product development. In other words, he also has a pretty successful track record with fashion label acquisitions that keep the celebrity founders in place, in a significant role.

I bet the same nikkas saying Rocawear/iconix group didn't buy BBC would probably say that Nas partnered with Def Jam (Jay-z was one of them). He also said Rocafella partnered with Def jam even though Def Jam bought 50% and left him with 16.67%.

But you're wrong tho... this whole thread is wrong

first off Bape is still HUGE overseas.. and it's still expensive as fukk.. I just went to their website.. 175 for a 80s style baseball hat.. cheapest jacket they got is actually a vest... for 450... shirts, 250... shoes, 260... and all these numbers are the LOWEST priced

meanwhile if you can find BBC in a department store chain, you pretty much are not high fashion.. and ye spoke on this.. said BBC is not high fashion anymore and he doesn't want to be BBC.. and how pharrel had to run over there for clothes and got a percentage, instead of owning his own company

kanye wants to be an owner... wake up, draw a design for HIS company.. give it to HIS people to make it.. approve it HIMSELF.. manufacture it, ship it, and sell it all under HIS company... no retail chains.. boutique stores... no $50 hoodies.. $800 hoodies...

He's said many times that he could go anywhere and get some "rapper deal" clothing line with your name on it, but you owned by another company and don't get the percentages like an owner or the power of one or final say on the clothes

So that "bu bu but I didn't price the tshirts or Yeezys" and "I wanna be affordable" nonsense some straight bullshyt,or is his definition of affordable been fuked up horribly.:mindblown:...is Kanye lyin to the people:mjpls:?personally I think dude just don't have this as thought out as he thought he did, some people are creative minds but not neccesarily business minds....sometimes that final vision of what you want is so vivid, its a roadblock that preocuupys you from being able to take the steps to get to that final point. He knows what he wants as the end result and has thought about that many times, but it dont seem like he thought very much about everything in between that time....He may be thinkin 10 years ahead but that aint neccesarily a good thing:heh:

this BBC thing clearly looks like a licensing deal, though. Rocawear/Iconix pays BBC to use their logo/name and makes designs for clothes that BBC/Pharrell have to give the thumbs up to before its put in the stores. Alot of brands to that because the company licensing the brand can put the product in way more stores and has the distribution already set up. It's not uncommon for a licensing company to have 5-10 brands under their belt at one time. My homie works for a licensing company and they have about 5-6 brands right now. The deals usually run for 3-5 years or so and then they move on to another brand. But this is very common in the so-called fashion industry. Obviously the high end brands like Gucci, LV, dont do this because it would dilute the fukk outta their stuff, but DKNY, Tommy, Calvin Klein all do that shyt. Their brands have been built up to a point where they can "rent out" or license the name, and collect a fee for it.

He knows what he's doing.

Dude wants to have some exclusive, not sold in stores, high quality Versace shyt, but will sell them at affordable prices that everyone can buy :dwillhuh:

I didn't set the price point on those $120 plain white tshirts :whoa: But you partnered with the company that sells shyt for that much? :dahell:

I'm on APC's website right now and they're selling tshirts for $90 and jeans for $235.

:aicmon: at Ye trying to act like he went to a company that sells shyt for this much with the expectation that this shyt would be affordable for the average person.

Kim has a clothing line at fukking Sears that's probably somewhat affordable, so that option isn't unknown to him.

But people are eating that shyt up on some "Ye doesn't want to be a slave, the white man won't even let him pick the prices of his clothes :noah:"

You guys must be idiots because BBC is still selling well, it may not be as huge and prominent as it once was but people wear it, it's still selling at high fashion retailers.

What's funny is BBC outlasted Bape :heh:

bape has been around since the early 90's, biggie was wearing it.

and it still sells

of course like most brands, the vintage stuff is the gold but dont sleep on bape

That's because their main focus was primarily the Asian market (Japan most notably). I mean, when you really think about it BBC is the American version of A Bathing Ape.

They aren't the first though. Many of the storied streetwear fashion brands have had another life in Japan such as Supreme and Stussy. Supreme has 5 stores in Japan alone and Stussy has exclusive retail locations there as well.

Real heads been knowing that Japan has been producing the dope shyt fashion wise and have always been ahead of the curve more than anybody else. There's so many people there and there's just honestly a more open minded consumer there with more access to disposable income. Tokyo especially as the epicenter of art, culture and fashion in the West. Also there's more of a focus on quality, detail, and taste there..compare to America where the art of the rampant business model run into the ground just to maximize earnings is more prevalent then the actual art.

this is why it kills me when nikkas act like asians just steal black culture shyt like white people

we basically been trading shyt back and forth with Japan for a minute now :yeshrug: equivalent exchange if you ask me, we gave japan the OG hiphop 90's style and the throwback + fitted style, and they gave pharrell/wayne streetwear who introduced it to most nikkas (who weren't already hip to shyt like hypebeast, sneakerfreaker, etc.)

It's never gonna happen.... cause unlike Kanye, Pharrell can sell merchandise without having act out for attention.

The whole Ice Cream Skate Team stood a chance at popping off, but the whole Lupe Fiasco/Stevie Williams/Terry Kennedy situation deaded that entire thing.

Most folks aren't gonna understand how true this is...... unlike most CAC's the japanese actually appreciate hip hop culture...and aren't just seeking out the coolest/trendiest shyt at the time to consume then throw away in a few months/year.

if people go back and look at these japanese cats in the street culture magazines from like early 2000... they'd see that they've been on that shyt.
