Let's see:

#1 seed - New York Giants - 12-4
#2 seed - Carolina Panthers - 12-4
#3 seed - Atlanta Falcons - 11-5
#4 seed - Minnesota Vikings - 10-6
#5 seed - Philadelphia Eagles - 9-6-1
#6 seed - Tampa Bay Buccaneers - 9-7

The Buccaneers get the final seed based on having a better conference record (8-4) than the Cardinals (7-5), Cowboys (7-5), and Bears (7-5). So yes, you are correct about ARZ missing the playoffs for the 2008 season under a best records in the conference scenario.

but it would be top 8 not top 6, where Arizona woulda made it in..

yall cutting 2 teams off to make yall arguments now :aicmon:

:whoa: I was about to get to that scenario next. Using the 2008 season, as @Stone referred to, I'm still trying to figure out how to break the 3-way tie between ARZ/DAL/CHI so I could add the #7 and 8 seeds.

So something needs to happen all the time in order to take measures to prevent it? :what:

It doesn't make sense, it's not fair, and it's very easily fixable but let's just leave it how it is because it doesn't happen often :manny:. :wtf: We've had numerous 8-8 teams or teams with inferior records hosting playoff games. Having anything like that happen once is too much.

With that logic, the NFL should banish all warm weather or dome teams from the league because they have an unfair advantage of playing all of their home games in nice climates, as opposed to out in the elements. Sh!t happens, deal with it.

The two are not comparable at all. Both teams have to play in the same conditions and everybody gets 8 homes games so that is fair because the standard is the same. A team that has to win 11 games to get the same thing that a team that won 7 games gets is not playing under the same conditions and thusly that is unfair because the standard isn't the same. It is truly amazing how willing people are to accept something that is patently unfair and illogical purely because it's always been that way or they are tired of hearing about it.

@Stone You were correct. If the best-record placement existed in the playoffs for the 2008 season (even with 8 slots), the Cardinals would not have made the postseason at all. Check my edits to post #40.

Gonna be real lame when some team has to go to the superdome and get blown out by a possible 6 - 10 or 7 - 9 saints team...

because then you'll just wanna make the rules up as you go along, because like everything, there will be a flaw that will show itself that you will want addressed, even in a format you want.

There's no perfect formula to this because sports, especially a sport like football has its ebbs and flows.

and what nobody fails to realize is that the more incentive you take away from the course of a season, the more excuses you give teams to flat out suck if they don't feel like they have a chance to win. Just because the NBA seems to not give a damn about divisions as much doesn't mean every other league needs to follow suit.

Divsion play is more about scheduling than anything. Their is no value in having the best record in a random grouping of four beyond that which is artificially given to it. I wouldnt mind top 12 overall either. I care more about rewarding excellence than tradition or giving meaning to random groupings

See above. I dont want divisions. They are cool for scheduling but if we are gonna place arbitrary groupings over winning and losing then I have a problem.

Christ, you don't even want conferences? :snoop: While we're at it just allow the CFL to be Superbowl eligible too

It aint that deep breh :heh:. If I win more games against NFL competition than you do then I am more deserving of a shot at the title than you, its that simple. There is no real rebuttal to that. If teams wanna suck thats on them. Trying to win as much as possible should be enough incentive within a competitive paradigm.

The fact that a possible 7-9 team at best from the NFC South will not only make it but host a home playoff game is :scust:

While either Dallas, Seattle, GB, or Detroit will miss the offs because of this bullshyt :camby:
Leave my division out your mouth boy :pacspit:
