Does anyone account that Illmatic was heavily bootlegged in NYC? Which also was the main place for the sales to come from for that album when talking about sales?

It's a reason it took so long to go plat or why stores couldn't "give that shyt away." nikkas that should have been supporting all year 1 had it already and at large. You know the lyrics

albums like Illmatic and The Infamous were some of the most bootleged albums in NYC...they probably went double or triple in the streets

not using that as an excuse tho Doggystyle was also heavily bootleged but It also reached a wider fanbase aka the white one who buy the majority of albums

RUN DMC, Beastie Boys, LL, etc. were going plat and multi-plat years before anyone knew who BIG was.

The idea that BIG "saved" the east because they weren't selling is :mjlol:and was largely cooked up after he died. As part of the myth surrounding him.

I get it, but "Ready To Die" only went 2x plat while he was alive. NY acts were doing that, and more before, during and after BIG.

Fred.

if you get it, then why are you trying to make a pointless argument?

no one is claiming the east didn't have artists who moved lots of units. but the era when those artists dominated commercially was nearing it's end, and there wasn't a clear successor. nas and wu had the love. redman had def jam on his back until meth and warren g arrived (and then later, jay z, ja and dmx). but biggie sold albums.

or did i not live this part of my childhood?

I'm saying "I get it" because it's human nature to prop people up after they die.

Which is all that is. Making BIG out to be some Superman that single-handedly saved the east coast.

Has nothing to do with actual reality, which is my beef.

I dunno about your childhood, nor do I remember what you're describing in real time. I was 19 in 1995, I don't recall the east "struggling" or there even being whispers of "who is next?" because there was still a gang of people selling. I didn't see or hear the narrative that BIG redeemed the east, or saved the east, or whatever you're saying....until after he died.

As far as the thread, if people are talking about quality :manny: you can't go wrong with either album.

If people are talking about sales :mjlol:this is a ridiculous comparison, because ("Live At The BBQ" aside) Nas was a completely new artist.

By the time "Doggystyle" dropped, Snoop had been Dre's protegé for a couple years, appeared on "The Chronic", etc.

Nas didn't have a Dre level co-sign out the gate so of course he didn't do similar numbers.

Without Dre, Snoop wouldn't have either.

Both were great and classic albums, stop falling for trolling. Still remember buying Illmatic for 10.99 and listening to that shyt on the way to basketball court :wow:

I remember scratching the words to The Shiznit (the whole song) on my Spanish class desk. Just narrowly avoiding a week of in school suspension :banderas:
