  • Dolphins Camp Report: Day 14
  • By James Walker | August 12, 2014 3:40:10 PM PDT
DAVIE, Fla. -- A daily review of the hot topics coming out of Miami Dolphins training camp:

i

  • Dolphins starting cornerback Cortland Finneganreturned to practice after missing the past two days. Finnegan hinted on social media that he had a death in the family. However, Finnegan did not want to get into specifics on Tuesday. On the field, Finnegan was back on the first team and also played in the slot on the nickel defense. The Dolphins rotated cornerbacks Jamar Taylor andWill Davis on the outside once Finnegan moved inside.

  • Miami is making a concerted effort to get new quarterback Brady Quinn acclimated to the offense. Dolphins quarterbacks coach Zach Taylor and offensive coordinator Bill Lazor spent plenty of time in practice giving Quinn personal instruction. The Dolphins signed Quinn on Monday to compete with Matt Moore for the No. 2 quarterback job. Depending on how Quinn develops, he could make his Dolphins debut Saturday in the second preseason game.

  • The play of the day goes to Dolphins safetyReshad Jones. He was demoted to the second team this week after violating the NFL’s policy on performance enhancing substances. But Jones isn’t going in the tank. He made an impressive, diving interception against Moore in team drills. Jones won't be available for the first four games of the regular season. Jimmy Wilson was promoted to the first team.

  • Miami’s defense did well with blitz packages in team drills. The Dolphins got sacks by cornerbacks Finnegan and Taylor on nickel blitzes, and Pro Bowl defensive end Cameron Wake also beat rookie right tackle Ja’Wuan James off the edge to cause a fumble by starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill. Miami’s pass protection looked solid in the preseason opener last week against the Atlanta Falcons. But the Dolphins’ offense struggled at times protecting the quarterback on Tuesday.

  • After three consecutive practices, the Dolphins will have their first day off this week on Wednesday. Miami will return to the field on Thursday in preparation for its second preseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

  • Miami Dolphins Stock Watch
With one preseason game in the books, here is a look at whose stock is rising and falling with theMiami Dolphins:

Falling

i

Jones1. Reshad Jones, safety: The Dolphins received bad news hours before their first preseason game when Jones was suspended four games for violating the NFL's policy on performance enhancing substances. Jones is the second Miami player to suffer this type of suspension, joining defensive end Dion Jordan. The Dolphins were very disappointed with Jones and immediately took him off the first team this week in practice. Jones practiced with the backups and still made plays. But he won't be available to start the regular season.

2. Dolphins linebackers: Miami has defensive talent at a lot of positions. But perhaps the biggest concern is at linebacker. Starters Philip Wheeler, Dannell Ellerbe and Koa Misi didn't have a good first showing in last week's 16-10 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. There were missed tackles and inconsistent coverage as Atlanta quarterbackMatt Ryan completed all seven of his passes. Tackling has been a major emphasis in practice this week, which is needed. The Dolphins' linebackers did an "Oklahoma drill" this week against the running backs and put on an ugly display. Miami’s running backs dominated the drill, which didn't offer much hope that Miami's tackling will drastically improve.

3. Matt Moore, backup quarterback: Moore has been a solid backup quarterback in Miami the past three seasons. But this year's training camp has been filled with injury and inconsistency. Moore was bothered with a shoulder ailment that has kept him out of practices and the first preseason game. The Dolphins made a statement by signing seven-year veteran quarterback Brady Quinn this week to compete with Moore. That should make things more interesting in the second half of preseason games.

Rising

1. Ryan Tannehill, quarterback: Tannehill could not have had a better start to the preseason. He was a perfect 6-for-6 passing for 62 yards and a touchdown against Atlanta. This is a good foundation for Tannehill to build on this preseason. He has had a solid week of practice and appears to be gaining confidence in Bill Lazor's new offense. Tannehill will try to have another solid performance Saturday against theTampa Bay Buccaneers.

2. Jimmy Wilson, safety: With Jones out, Wilson is the next man up. Wilson will get a golden opportunity to become a full-time starter for the first time in his career. The former seventh-round pick has been solid in training camp and the entire offseason, earning the trust of the coaching staff. Wilson was projected to be Miami’s nickel cornerback. But those plans are were thrown out this week.

3. Terrence Fede, defensive end: There is something about seventh-round picks in Miami. The Dolphins have had success drafting players in the final round. Wilson, receiver Rishard Matthews and special teams ace Don Jones have all produced as seventh-rounders, and Fede could be next to make Miami's 53-man roster. Fede has shown a good motor and athleticism in training camp and the preseason. With Jordan’s suspension, Fede could step in as the fourth defensive end.

Here are the most interesting Miami Dolphinsstories Wednesday from around the Web:

  • Chris Perkins of the Sun Sentinel writes the Dolphins are still searching for their nickel cornerback.

Morning take: Jimmy Wilson’s promotion to starting safety due to Reshad Jones’ suspension opened a spot in the nickel. Currently, the Dolphins are experimenting with moving starting cornerback Cortland Finnegan inside on obvious passing downs and bringing in Jamar Taylor at corner.

Morning take: Thomas is in the best shape of his career, and it has led to him nearly locking up the starting right guard position. Thomas must perform well in the next two preseason games and stay healthy.

  • The Dolphins' team site reports new Dolphins quarterback Brady Quinn feels he has something to prove.

Morning take: Quinn was once viewed as a franchise quarterback, but things didn’t pan out. Quinn still believes he has good football left in him and will try to secure a backup job.

Morning take: Miami’s coaching staff believes Jordan should stay at defensive end. He's bulked up in the offseason in order to become an every-down player at that position.

I dont know brehs. SOme of the things i was banking on for the season to be successful are starting to fall apart
  • Deion Jordan - Dude impressed everyone in camp but not only is he Suspended 4 games but now he looks sh!tty at DE and might get moved to LB
  • O-Line - They looked the same in preseason as they did at the end of last year: decent at pass blocking but horrible ar run blocking
  • LineBackers - As bad as they were last year i figured they couldnt get worse...i might be wrong

i dont think we can suceed unless our defense is dominant. I know it's only been one pre-season game but we didnt shine last week
