So. Cal
Suprised that he put Pun above Biggie when Pun pretty much sharked his whole flow, style and cadence.. Or maybe thats why he DID rate him so highly?

:ohhh:
:childplease:The only thing they had in common was being ugly and fat. And why would anyone rate a rapper in they top 10 for biting a rapper not in their top 10?

As far as stricly lyrics go there are several names missing: Canibus (his overall career is a joke, but anyone sayin' he wasn't a lyrical beast needs to check himself), Pharoahe Monch, Mos Def, Masta Ace, AZ or GZA.

It all comes down to preference, Kool G Rap is old-school and it makes sense that he will name his peers rather than those that came after him. But KRS-1 being more lyrical than Biggie :krs:

Yea, if he's going by what you guys define as "lyrical" than there's no way he should have Cube, KRS and Scarface over BIG. He just must not be feeling Big like that.

Ra wasn't scrutinized because it was the late 80's, by the time 96-97 rolls around things have evolved to the point that just rapping about rapping will keep you within a certain niche.
Your perception of him not being scrutinized leaves out the fact that while he is certainty respected as a forefather of complex lyricism, his run as a front runner didn't last that long. He didn't get to stick around and be relevant enough to be "that nikka" to be getting scrutinized so heavily.
You take a year or two off in the 90's and come back and all of a sudden you got so many different sounding rappers compared to when Hip hop was very much localized in NY where rakim was king shyt. The game moved too fast for him.
My point is, why is Rakim being mentioned in top 10 lists when he was SO one dimensional...?

Yes, he was a pioneer of a certain type of lyricism...I would NOT call it "complex lyricism"...He is definitely a Hall of Fame rapper, but certainly, not a top 10 rapper of all time, if the list is based on more objective criteria...

Dude didn't even survive the game changing...

I'll one-up the weirdo factor and say that MC Paul Barman is a technically stronger lyricist. Say what you may about having a large vocabulary, rhyming a palindrome is on another level.

With that being said, Googling "MC Paul Barman" and "sales" don't seem to go hand in hand. :skip:
That's why I added the qualifier "50K album sales"....:russ:

I was anticipating some slick motherf+cker mentioning some local Super Lyrical MC that most of us have NEVER heard of, even though we are very active in the Hip Hop...

:lolbron:

I heard Paul Barman years and years ago, what he does is the easiest shyt in the world to do

If you want to get technical, technical, the URL/KOTD battle rappers are way more lyrical than everybody. Those Grind Time nikkas did that Paul Barman style of rapping just better

He's not one dimensional at all. I can tell you've never listened to a full Rakim album in your life. You're championing Canibus diversity lyrically but saying all Rakim rapped about was rapping, when Rakim had waaaaaaaay more socially aware and relevant content in his material.

It can be argued Bis had as a good lyrics as Rakim, but Rakim just had that smoothness in his flow and delivery. Rakim was certainly not just a early version of Bis, they are both unique and dope in their own way but different artists.
