its one of the greatest albums from any genre but the comparison to RD is pointless for more reasons than one.

lol @ "street album". this may hurt some feelings but 2001 was more of a white people's album. If youre not from the west coast, you most likely were either white or or just corny as all hell if you were riding heavy with this album.

and it wasn't all that either. I give it a 4 at best and that's being nice.

Not true. Reasonable Doubt was critically acclaimed upon dropping I'm talking 5 Mics from the Source and XXL. It moved a decent amount of units and the singles charted. It's hard to have the best mafioso album when the best is OB4CL which is arguably a top 5 album All-Time.

Of course '01 would sell more he was what 15 years into the game, an established legend already by that point. Jay was a relative unkown.

RD got 4 mics from the Source. XXL didn't even exist.

Sales are irrelevant - especially given the OP's assertion that one album is a better "street album" then the other.

This is a strange comparison. RD was the work of one artist - it was an album with a cohesive theme. 2001 was the work of many different people and did not have a cohesive theme.

Neither album is perfect. 2001 starts to fall off in terms of quality after Next Episode. RD has some beats that don't stand out quite like the standouts.

Still - in terms of lyrics - I don't see how this doesn't go to RD? What are the stellar verses on 2001? Sure - its a relatively well written album from start to finish - but are we really comparing it to Jay in his lyrical prime?

Production is about even as well. Both albums were very well produced. But not perfect.

Which album was better engineered with better "sonics" is completely irrelevant.

So what is the case for 2001 then? What was the lasting impact of 2001? The original Chronic transformed the game - but what did 2001 do?

All Music and Rolling Stone did their reviews years later. No publication called the album a classic at the time it dropped, that I'm aware of.
