Let me end this thread real quick.

Jay has existed in both eras. He could drop an album right now, 20 years into his career, and it's gonna sell something. He ain't gonna come out and sell 10k.

Can anybody in their right mind argue Drake could've existed in, let's say, '96? In any capacity?

Never mind the ghost writing shyt. That would've ended his career straight away. I'm talking about purely off the kind of music he's doing, and his image. He would've been tossed out of the game sideways. Forget his affiliation with J. Prince, because that never would've happened 20 years ago.

He's right. Think about how much competition Jay had in '96. He had damn near the entire roster of who we consider legends, in their prime, to content with.

Fred.

Exactly, and I was mainly just talking about the internet for this argument but you added another dimension....Because when you talk about popularity now,it seems like the only criteria is being known.....Well do young cats realize how easy it is to be KNOWN OF in todays era:mjlol:? You realize when Nas and Jay was battling, probaly the biggest battle in hiphop history,it was so many people/outsiders who had no idea that shyt was going on:mjlol:...Fast forward and anybody whos on social media knows about a damn Meek and Drake beef because its the talk of the internet, fast forward to where dance moves can go "viral" and next thing you know Bobby Smurda is famous,Soulja Boy famous, the news is talking about Drake dancing in a hotline bling video:francis:...You lil nikkas think the dougie got a chance to go "viral":mjcry:

With Fred adding in a dimension,I don't think you can even say Drake was bigger than prime Jayz of the south,T.I.P....T.I definitely had greater competition....He arguably had as many females as apart of his fanbase, more classic albums than Drake,I'm going to guess more sales than Drake, huge hits in a more competitive period:sas1:.

Matter of fact since yall wanna be disrespectable its time to stop being so humble, from now on we need to stop even acknowledging the Drakes,J Coles,Kendricks as anything more than the midcard nikkas that they are....No more of that superstar, elite,"on top of the game" talk,as if that means anything when we all know they are there by default:comeon:

That's like if The Rock,The Undertaker,Stone Cold,Bret Hart,Hulk Hogan and all the other main event nikkas died in a tragic plane crash....Aint nobody tryna hear about the star power of the Brooklyn Brawler just because he in the main event now:mjlol:

What's crazy to me is people try to downplay the stars of 20 years ago because "everybody was selling" but don't ever take into account the internet and social media in modern times.

Back in the day literally the only way to become a rapper was sign to a major. Even if you were independent, your end game was aligning yourself with a major.

In 2016 you could create a dance in your backyard, film it in HD with your smart phone, upload it to Youtube, and get signed off that. The low as fukk entrance fee to the rap game in 2016 > people buying records 20 years ago, in terms of advantages.

People thought Nelly and Ludacris were going to dominate forever.

When Drake gets 20 years under his belt we can re-visit this thread but I am thinking it should be locked just on principal.

Lets stop leaving that opening too, unless the completion improves Drake might still be around 10 years from now:snoop:

He's a champion beating up on tomato cans right now, even worse he's using steroids to be able to do it:snoop:...To make things more embarrassing for Drake you have another champion(Kendrick) who gets all the respect from their peers, gets all the nods from the analyst as being the better boxer, and that he will have the better career.

On paper it would impress you if he knocked out Kendrick:wow:,unless your like me and think Kendrick is where he is by lack of competeition and tomatoe cans too:francis:

:dead: at that pic,at Drake being Virgil,Jay Dibiase:banderas:

With the internet,Its so many chances to get a LOOK,and not just a look from a hiphop audience which is what you hoped for back in the 90's and early 2000's....you have a chance to get a LOOK from so many different demographics, and markets that share the same space with social media/youtube now when you upncoming....but how many people are watching these dudes because theres nothing else to watch, how many are watching because its easy to watch?and how many people actually fukk with you.

Youtube views don't even impress me in terms of "popularity",let it go back to taking 10 minutes for a video to load up and we'll see how many views these dudes get:mjcry:,the watchers would be forced to make tough decisions about what and who they pay attention to.

As someone immersed in the culture heavily back when Jay was in his prime (HKL to BP era)...Drake has surpassed him in terms of cultural relevancy

The music is debatable...but while driving from philly to va on sunday I listened to what I considered the top 50 drake songs & that boy has quality songs for days

The only rappers in Drake's league for # of quality songs in a 7 yr span is Nas & Jay

It's not a hip hop album..... by any means

Jay-Z is 20 years deep in this .......and could still draw a crowd

Waiting another 12 years then you can make this comparison

It's not a hop hop album but it is a classic

What album would have a rap hit, pop hit & r&b hit all on the same album

Drake didn't change the game but he influenced it greatly
