What markets?

Drake has penetrated markets that Jay Z opened up. Jay Z pretty much created the hypebeast hip hop fan.

I'm not the biggest Hov fan but his commercial success is unparalleled.
Commercial success in what sense? Drake is CORPORATELY SPONSORED. Jay-Z IN HIS PRIME never had the corporate backing Jay-Z had. Jay-Z was never as visible as Drake is in his prime. Just look at the way the NBA and other large, corporate brands are behind him. Dude isn't just doing commercials and advertising for them.

Vol 2 and Vol 3 were considered pop rap albums when they were released.
No, it's not. We can't even engage in a discussion if that's the foundation of your argument.

Let's take "The Message" by Nas and "Over My Dead Body" by Drake.

That's the first song off a pop rap album from 1996 vs a pop rap album from 2011.

Can you compare the two? fukk no. They're not remotely on the same planet.

Breh what are you talking about? Promotion in 2016 is literally a click away. The fact that you're using a free mixtape as a reason in favor of your argument is :dahell:

There wasn't any option for free mixtapes 20 years ago. Unless it was literally a mixtape you were handing out in person. You get signed in '95, you sat your ass on a shelf until your label decided it was time to come out. In 2016 a rapper like Freddie Gibbs can exist completely independent of major labels, via Twitter, Soundcloud, Youtube, etc.

Fred.
Dude, you are all over the place with your arguments. First off, pop rap from 96 is undoubtedly different from pop rap in 2016, BECAUSE POP AS A GENRE HAS CHANGED. What was considered POP POP back then is not considered pop now. The sounds have changed with the times. Hip hop fans considered It Was Written as a COMMERCIAL album, not a POP rap album.

Also, why are you bringing up Freddie Gibbs and independent labels? We are talking POPULARITY. Personal promotion in 2016 is a click away, which proves my point that it is a lot harder to be recognized in today's market, as it usually comes at the expense of the artist's dime. More and more artists go the free, internet route until their album/song is noticed, and then they become backed by a major label (if the label wasn't behind them before them going viral that is). As I said earlier, the process for being discovered and "blowing up" is a lot harder now because upcoming artist's aren't as visible as they were in the 90s and 2000s. If you were signed and the executives thought you were going to make a splash, chances are you showed up in someone else's video, on someone else's song, etc until people started to talk about you. You built your buzz that way. Nowadays artists have to front their own stuff before they get ANY backing. Labels just don't want to risk losing money.

You must not be familiar with Jay Z. He has spent the last 10 years hopping from corporate deal to corporate deal. LIke every 6 months he announces a new partnership. He is literally the reason Drake can do what he does. His last album was released by Samsung....

in this era i'm starting to respect Jay more than ever, dude is on a whole another plateau. Drake is a superstar but he will never be on Jay's level. at least we've never seen Jay break out dance moves, can't say the same for Drake.

Jay has made

Kanye West
J.Cole
Foxy Brown
Beanie Sigel
Freeway
Memphis Bleek
Young Gunz

rap stars. not to mention Rick Ross & Young Jeezy. even gave Rihanna who's now pop music's biggest act. where's Drake's artists? they not even close to the success of these other artists. he needs to work on that in order to take his spot.

IN HIS PRIME. Did you not read the thread title? Jay-Z prime was from 96-2002. Jay-Z wasn't getting corporate BUSINESS deals back in 2000, breh.

This thread is bananas and I'm sure drake himself would disagree with this thread. It was easier to get on back in Jay's debut age? Lmao I can tell who's actually been around at the time. Guess making your own mix cassette tape and selling out your trunk is cake compared to clicking on a computer or checking fb lol. :mjlol:

Jay Z has had 2 primes. His peak in terms of mainstream fame was 04-09. And thats kinda the point. These kind of deals weren't available to rappers until Jay, Puff and 50 started doing them in the last decade...
