In the mid-2000s Jay basically secured his spot as the most important/biggest post-Biggie/Pac rapper. Nas never really built momentum to his career, Eminem was only great for a few years (though he still sells), Kanye is an affiliate/friend so there's not as much direct competition there. So for a while there it looked like Jay-Z would be King of Rap indefinitely. But now here comes Aubrey "Drake" Graham, with song after motherfukking song pretty continuously since 2009.

This thread is about how for while (around 09) it looked like Jay z would dictate rap culture and have rap's ear when he dropped project forever. Because at that time he held this position in rap for longer than anyone ever has and with no hint of anything changing.

Now Drake has become to mainstream rap what Jay z was (Just an omnipresence and bigger than life feeling) No matter who got hot and who was running shyt, there music mattered.

Now Jay z is at the point where no is no fever around him dropping a new project and he isn't sure how to navigate this new landscape.

He has been playing tricks with the general public for quite some time anyway (WTT, Tour with Timberlake, Tour with Bey)
