Summer Walker is definitely more Keyshia Cole than Ashanti who had major mainstream success, songs that could be played 10 years from now in all white establishments.
Summer is far more in the classic Rnb lane she’s got the women in the palm of her hands but she’s more in that Keyshia Cole lane the level just below true stardom that the likes of Ashanti Alicia Keys were achieving during the same time.
Summer came out 30 years ago would have been in that Mary J lane but she still needs era defining hits that the likes of Ella Mai and SZA have had in the last 5 years.
If Mary J Blige is the comparison for Summer, I'd say someone like Mariah Carey is the comparison for SZA. None of this is directly 1:1 but SZA has crossed over far more than Summer, clearly is the bigger artist and has the most potential to take that next step. Whether she takes that next step is another matter. The singles she's dropped so far have been hits, but her behavior and TDE's incompetence are issues. She admitted her new single was supposed to come out last week but she nixed it because she noticed a small issue with the video. That type of weirdo shyt is clearly holding her back and I'm not sure where she goes from here in this mental state.
Beyonce, Rihanna, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, etc all put in the work early. Massive tour? Do it. Endless radio promo? Do it. Meeting with DJs and program directors? Do it. I recognize it's a different era today but becoming a pop superstar still requires playing the game. The label has been playing it for her so far, getting her these huge features (Kendrick/Black Panther, Justin Timberlake, Doja, etc) but is she capable of working for an entire year? Videos, release day promo, late night TV appearance, tour, awards season etc? Or is she going to have a breakdown over a minor inconvenience and blow everything up?
