How is this funny to you? Like legit, I’m confused why this sounds so incomprehensible lol. Are you trolling?

I’m the prime age of a Jordan/Jackson Stan. I was a kid in 80s and 90s, the years they both were the goats.

Why is it so far fetched to think that a kid born in 2017, that will be 20 in 2037 won’t think of MJ the way we did? Be real.

My Dad (and Mike Jack) stanned James Brown and Ali. I didn’t give much thought to them it was all about Mike Jack and Tyson. Life moves on, some slower for others.

Forgotten? Hell no. But my 18 year old daughter was born in 2004 and only knows Jordan as a shoe and meme first, hooper in debates and highlights. Her kids will know less.

How many Gen Z said “Madden is a person????” Legit!

Life moves on people.
The fukking nerve :russ:

Michael Jackson is still a legend, no one’s forgetting that name anytime soon. Let’s start there. Second, why would you expect someone not into the culture to know who Madden or Jordan is? The fact that their names get brought up in the first place is testament to their status. That alone will spur curiosity and research into why things are named after them. Legends from literally decades ago still get remembered.

Wrong, me being a Bron fan has no bearing I'm my opinion. Long as the world keeps spinning and the NBA is still a thing, there will come a point where Bron will start fading from regular consciousness as well...

This is the perfect example. Mike is the biggest individual in American entertainment history and quite possibly the history of entertainment on Earth. And by entertainment I mean music, arts, film, sports, everything...

June will mark 13 years since his passing, and even this guy, objectively, far and away a larger global icon than Michael Jordan---->even Mike's name and presence has faded some, and this is in only 13 years...

The answer is right under your nose: it's not the people of Bron's era that control the narrative shaping of GOAT basketball players yet...

Simple explanation...

Bron wasnt born until two days before 1985. He's a Millenial, a generation of people where the widely accepted start date of birth is 1980 or '81. My point? Millenials don't own these rags that talk about GOATs; Millenials aren't the biggest name sports journalists on TV at this point (think Skip, Stephen A, and the other big name journalists; the most popular one who happens to be a Millenial is Nick Wright but there aren't many his age with prominent voices on TV yet)...

Obviously, as time goes on, the Boomers and Gen Xers that hold these seats and positions of power will age out and give way to people of Bron's age---Millenials--and even younger, and publicly you'll start seeing the narrative change...

It's gonna happen, and alota you nikkas gonna act like you weren't told it would if you live long enough...

Amongst Millenials overall there is still a slight Mike consensus but thats because older Millenials were victim of Jordan Mystique as well as many older Millenials saw Mike play. Millenials born 1990 and later are much less inclined to have Mike as the GOAT and imstead theres a diverse, balanced charge of who the GOAT is.

Kareem was always near the convo but there's little sourcing that shows he ever had strong momentum for #1. 20 years after his retirement was '09 and no, people weren't really checking for Kareem hard in this convo back in 2009...

Top 5, Rushmore scale player, sure, he been in that regard forever. The renewed interest in Kareem as THE GOAT didn't get to where it is currently until Bron started threatening Mike's placement, then you got muhfukkas on some "what about Kareem" shyt...
Lebron will never be seen as goat over MJ. Bron made a mistake trying to be the MJ replacement in my opinion when his persona and game is not similar. Made sense for Kobe though. There will be a new goat in the future but it ain’t Bron.

Give it enough time Basketball as a sport will be forgotten. Wade is basically talking that sports Ozymandias talk.

in the current era. It would be better to discuss GOATs during era of activities. There was a MJ era, and a Kobe era, Now we’re in the LeBron/Curry era. Giannis might be the next era.

MJ is the Babe Ruth of basketball. He been dead damn near 100 years and we have seen better players but Ruth and is still synonymous with baseball.

Jordan will always be considered Top 3 or Top 5 but #1 status will depend on whether Gen Z and beyond produces someone that can supplant him.

Jordan, Kareem, Magic and Bird are all Baby Boomers...that's their contribution to basketball.

Generation X gave us Shaq, Kobe, Dirk, Iverson, Timmy D etc., and that's THEIR contribution to hoops.

Millenials got Bron, Wade, Steph, KD, Giannis, Harden etc., and that's our legacy to the game.

If we take away the nostalgia of MJ, Bron is one of the few guys that could go neck and neck. Bron is like Peyton Manning or Brees with the crazy numbers and SOME championship success while MJ has considerably more championship success but also the numbers like Brady.

Bron will never top MJ because people simply don't like him enough to ever let him be #1 plus he's failed on the biggest stage too many times. Whoever tops MJ will be someone that's not yet in the league....may not even be born yet.

Agreed. I'd say GOAT status is often talent, results, and "narrative", but having the perfect narrative can be a crap-shoot.

i.e. Magic, Kobe, Duncan won early... so no way were they going to finish undefeated. MJ otoh had the GOAT narrative with how everything fell in place for him... which led to the perceived invincibility**

Credit is due bc MJ did dominate HOFs but obviously reaching the Finals after the Magic and Bird superteams were flabby.. and Bulls mgt breaking up the team in '98 before they got too flabby, was impeccable timing.

**
Even the '95 loss; the baseball/"half-season" narrative was perfect, bc i'm not sure any version of MJ was going to lead that shoddy Bulls roster past the '95 Magic or '95 Rockets front-lines... And so next year MJ "gets his full season" but they also get Rodman, and ORL gets decimated with injuries.

That said, LeBron had a similar enough path as MJ but that 2011 Finals loss would be like Jordan fumbling in 91. Even 2014 would be like if the Bulls got smoked by the '98 Jazz. Hell, you could argue KD joining GSW (and costing LBJ 2 titles with CLE) was inspired by KD seeing LBJ jump ship to win his 2 titles with MIA... in the process beating a young KD in the Finals. Full circle ish. Point being LeBron has the talent and enough "results" but it'll always be tough to sell ppl on the narrative. Might still be early enough for Giannis but a long shot.
